Do any of you wear masks while you clean your fids' cages? I just read that dried airborne poop could cause human illness if inhaled.

Nope. I clean it twice a day and hose it down when necessary. Our windows are usually open too.

I don't, I clean the cages once a day. But then I know my birds are healthy, if it was a strangers bird who hadn't been to a vet I would be more wary. I think the airborn illness is more likely to happen in situations were good cage cleanliness is not maintained, or the birds are unhealthy.

Posted again by accident.

I do not wear a mask. I hose the bottom grill off and wipe it down, change the bottom paper and wipe down the bottom, clean the poop off the cage. I consider if I should clean like this every day. I read a article that seemed of the opinion bird owner need to be vigorous on making sure there is no dried poop. Yes, I think the chances are higher of getting sick if you never cleaned the cage. But this article seemed to be of the view any poop that sits out will emit toxins.

guess I need to do more cleaning cycles.. I did it twice a week thinking that was good enough.

No mask here, either.

Here's something you can do though.... lightly spray the cage papers before removing them from the cage. It'll help keep the dust down.
