Ricco - Goffin's Cockatoo
OH, hi again. I'm warning you all.... You're about to get a plethora of questions from me over the next couple weeks... :p

So, I got Ricco's (still not sure if I'm changing his name.. LOL) cage all set up in my room. Right now he's in a 26X20X35 cage. This one: 26"x20" Dome Top Cage with Removable Stand - Dome Top Cages by A&E Cage Company

I bought him a 36X28X65 cage. This one:
36"x28" Dome Top Cage with 1" Bar Spacing - Dome Top Cages by A&E Cage Company

Anyway, so he's going to have a lot more room! But first of all, I'm wondering how to set up his cage... I just want to get a general idea of where to put perches, toys, etc. I know I want to put a cement perch on the inside of the door so that I can teach him to go to that one when he wants to come out so that I don't have to deal with cage aggression issues. I also know that I'm going to put a rope perch as the highest point for his sleeping spot. But other than that, I'm lost! :( So any ideas, suggestions, pictures of your cages, etc. would be much appreciated! :)

Also: She's sending his old cage home with us because we feel he may feel better about the transfer of homes and not get as stressed out. But when should I transition him to the new cage? Should I put his old cage by the new cage and wait or should I keep him in a different part of the house first? If I put his new cage next to his old cage, will he think there's another bird in there or something? He lives with other birds right now. After I get him switched, I'm going to use his old cage as his outside cage. Wise idea or not since it could trigger memories? Hmm.

Thanks, guys. :)

I just bought the same dome top for Chico after my disaster with eBay!

It's perfect. Goffins are active and need a lot of room and toys to keep them busy. Keep his old cage as an extra for sleeping in another room. For now put them near each other and let him explore it see how he responds. Put him in his old cage to sleep....so exciting!

Thank you!! :D

I know, it is really exciting! I just wish I could get some more ideas :(

Bump?

I definitely like the second cage much better than the first (no offense).

If you have the space to do it, I say set up his old cage next to his new one. That way he sees it, and can get comfortable with it. Maybe once he starts exploring, put a perch and a toy in it? And once he's willing to go in it, then transition him completely over?

Neither of mine came with a cage, so they were just kind "stuck" in what I had for them, but neither seemed bothered by that.

Why would I take offense to that? LOL The first one is what his current owner is housing him in and the second one is his mansion I bought him ;)

Anyway, yep, I have the space so I think I will do that. Should I not set the new cage up yet with toys and perches?

Make sure to avoid putting perches above food and water bowls, watch how he plays and go from there. you will find his preferences as you get to know him and can place his favorite perches there as well as fun toys. A lot depends on him. I would let him out and see if he explores his new cage on his own and allow him to become comfortable, then you can eliminate the old one. I am so happy for you!!!

Wanna hear something sad, I saw a Moluccan in a cage that is smaller than the one your little one is in.

Okay, I did my best at setting up his cage tonight :) I think it looks good, although a bit bare. But I read you should only put in 2-3 toys for the first month or so while he settles in. Here are some pictures: Please tell me what you think honestly! Suggestions for improvement also if it doesn't look so great. I won't take offense LOL.

P.S. I chose to put the blue fleece thingy in there because his current owner told me that he loves to snuggle with a rope toy he has now when he sleeps. I figure it would help him out a bit. :) Plus since I believe him to be an overpreener, hopefully that will help a bit with that too.

Sooo what do you think??

Oh.. P.S.S. That's not food in the bowl. It's a bowl full of foot toys. :)

I love it!:)I take it slow with new toys too but I think some small foot toys would probably be appreciated. Some can even be made at home.

Posted right after you I have no other suggestions then haha.

Thank you! :D

Oh, and two more things...

1. I didn't intentionally buy all blue things! LOL. In fact, two of those were from the internet and I didn't even choose a color! My shower perch also came today, I didn't choose that color either but guess what... Blue! Haha, maybe it's a sign that Ricco is definitely a boy! Hehehe

2. I'm also adding one more rope perch to the top of the cage (or the side, can't decide yet) on the outside for something else to set him on when I'm folding laundry or something in the bedroom :) I'm just lazy and didn't want to go out to the car to grab it tonight. LOL

I wish I could do something like that instead I use this perch it's on a big stand on wheels works pretty nice lol.It has a toy hook I just don't have it attached.

Haha. Hey, that stand works! I plan on having one big stand in the living room (it's PVC I just made it last night! Just have to wrap the vet wrap around it and I'll upload pics :) , one table top one for the dining room/kitchen counter, then we have a PVC toilet handle thingy in our bathroom (the ones for handicapped persons) that I'm going to wrap with vet wrap and hang a toy off of hehe, then in the bedroom will be his cage with some perches on the outside for him to hang out on. :) Yay!

Sounds awesome! He can be everywhere with you:)

I find with the rope perches it is helpful to make them kinda flat then bend them in different directions like a zig zag since they tend to end up trying to be as high as possible and have to duck. I try to make it easy to connect the spaces via the long perches to the shorter ones. My birds rarely use the short perches except when eating since that is what is in front of the bowls. In other parts they seem to like the option of using the long perches to navigate. Another great option that is becoming really popular on here is a plank perch, I recently added one and my macaw LOVES it. It is her second favorite place and her sleep spot. She also has a blast destroying it because it is pine and easy to chew. They are super easy to make too so are cheap as well. I think that little Ricco will be one spoiled little man.

I love that cage, I have the 32x23 version for my green cheek pair and they love it. I'm sure your little guy will love it too. When you get him I would just put the cages right next too each other, open the doors and see which one he likes best( make sure there is food and water in both cages before you do it because that could effect his choice). I bet he will choose the bigger cage.

From my experience, Goffins aren't that shy and he should take to the new cage without too much difficulty. Just gauge his body language. If he starts to lean back and/ or tightens his feathers as you are putting him in then stop...Good luck with your new bird!
