Can parakeets and cockatiels get along?

Recently one of my parakeets died and now I have one who is all alone. I want to get another bird to keep him company, but I was thinking that maybe I could get a cockatiel instead of another parakeet because I love cockatiels and have always wanted to have one. So my question is, can cockatiels and parakeets get along? I would keep them in separate cages of course, and only let them out of their cages together when I am supervising, but I've heard that budgies are more aggressive and I wouldn't want the cockatiel to be stressed out.

Also, I know parakeets are very social, so will it fulfill my budgie's social needs to have another bird close by but not in the same cage? Especially since the bird is not a parakeet? Or would it be better for him to be with another parakeet?

Sorry for all the questions. If you have any advice I'd be really grateful.

Sorry for your recent loss.

I've seen cockatiels and budgies get along, but there really is no guarantee they will like each other. The budgie may feel threatened by the cockatiel's larger size and may act aggressive, or the cockatiel may not like the budgie, period. Anything could happen. Of course keeping them in separate cages is ideal. But honestly if I were you, I would choose another budgie rather than a cockatiel. There's a better chance they would get along if they're the same species, size, etc.

there's in no way a guarantee they will get along even if another budgie. But yes different species can get along. The one that springs to mind for me is a yellow crested cockatoo being closer friends with a blue masked lovebird. Just like humans it comes down to personality

I'm going to say go for a tiel over a budgie :)

They might get on, or they might not. From what I understand, you're goal is to have them share space outside of their cages? My 'tiel hates all of the other birds, and will spend most of her time on a curtain rail out of reach - but, she is considerably happier when her cage is in sight and sound of the others.

You are the one doing the feeding, training, cleaning etc. Don't get another bird for your first bird, they might not thank you for it regardless of species!. Get another bird because you've done the work and research, and you want another bird. Which would be a cockatiel :)

Depends on the bird as an individual.

My cockatiel and budgie get along just fine, he also got along with a past budgie, and would like to get along with my Lovebird, but she's not a social bird. Just because other people have cockatiels that get along with budgies doesn't mean they all get along. It took weeks for Elvis to get use to others bird after being alone for months.

No one can tell if a new bird will get along with your current bird.

I'm fostering a cockatiel and budgie that are housed together, and have been for a number of years but they were both pretty young when they were put together, and both hand raised. The budgie is actually the more aggressive one surprisingly, but they do get along.

Still, I've had plenty of other birds that don't get along and generally you want something with a similar size and personality, so your mileage may vary and you need to be prepared for it to not work out. They might get along outside of the cage but not be able to be housed together.

Thanks for all the answers, everyone. I'm still torn but for now, I'm going to spend a month or so bonding with my parakeet before I get him a companion. Leaning towards getting a parakeet because my extra cage isn't big enough for a cockatiel so I'd have to buy one.

My cockatiel does not like my parakeet or my conure. My conure does not like my cockatiel or my parakeet. My parakeet, however, is the most social toward other birds. She tries to get close to my other birds without them lunging at her or flying away. It can definitely work out, but not for me. I am actually considering getting my budgie a friend so she won't feel so rejected. I would get another budgie as a companion for your current one, and get a cockatiel as a companion for yourself, and keep it in a separate cage. Cockatiels are great birds!!!
