Hi Everyone

We have a 6 month old Hand Reared Galah
We have had him for about 3 weeks now and is coming along fantastically, stepping onto our hands without hesitation willingly and without the need of a treat most of the time. Just really wants to be with us now rather than sit on his cage.

My question is now that he has got more confidence how to I teach him what he is allowed to chew and what he is not? Being a typical young bird he just wants to try out everything!

Thanks :)

I don't really know if there is a way but with puppies you take away unsuitable chewing items and replace them with suitable items and its just a matter of reputation but birds are by far more intelligent and devious then dogs. But I'd give it a try see if it works. If he is chewing on something you don't want him to tell him bad bird and replace it right away with something he can chew on and praise him when he is happily chewing away.

Hope that helps

Give him lots of toys that he can shred and chew to his hearts content and keep him away from anything you do not want him to chew.

This is an amazing thread, and I've been looking for this information everywhere! Though there doesn't seem to be a definite answer! I thought I heard you can give larger birds cardboard boxes and let them chew through 2 or 3 and he's "done" for the day… However, they'll probably begin to recognize they can chew anything cardboard or anything resembling cardboard?

I'm no help since I have no idea how to answer this, but I find this thread really interesting!
