City Dwelling Cage Cleaning...

I have a large iron cage. I can't fit it through the door without taking it apart. I've had the cage for about 6 months now and it's showing signs of rusting at the joints, but nothing hazardous to my Pickles.

I have a balcony that I can hose it off at, but I'm scared of quickening the rust factor.

I have a cage disinfectant that I wipe the bars with. I am a very sanitary cage cleaner... almost obsessed.

How often do you think I should take apart the cage given these factors and hose it down? What's everyone else's habits? Anyone else dealing with a similar problem?

I live in an apartment. I take mine out and hose them down about once a month. In the winter I just wipe down the bars often. Bean's cage is starting to show signs of rust. Nothing he can get to so at this point I am not to worried about it.

Oh and I wash the grates in the tub once a week.

How are the hand steamers for cleaning. I have a floor steamer, its good for poo, but I havent tried the hand steamers.

We live in a pretty big house but our cage, even with the seedguards off, doesn't fit through the door ways either:mad: So I know where you are coming from. Does your bottom grate at least come out so you can put it in the shower and wash it?

@ Icywolf
Thanks for your reply. Yea, It has a grate and bottom try that I wash regularly. I'm just curious how often people with the same problem wash the whole thing? I don't want to be a bad dad just because it's such a task to take it apart.

@Merlin's Mom
I have a hand steamer. It's so-so. It's great for my kitchen walls but leaves this mysterious odor. Because I've lost a parrot, when Pickles sneezes or looks at me funny I think he's on his death's door (not really but it does make me nervous)

With the rust I clean it off with vinegar and the put some vegetable oil to slow oxidization. Seems to be helping.

Reading from what you have said about the rust, I would rather get another cage, it is not worth your birds health.
Please read up old threads about Sterretje, a bird who had lead poisoning...... how the poor bird suffered...............
