I have had my Conure for 3 months and have not been able to cut his nails. Is this bad? What happens if I don't cut his nails?

They will over grow and get caught in things easily and can tear off so you really need to get them clipped soon. Lilo's claws would get too long and sharp and get stuck in the chairs and whatnot and she would scream in pain because they were getting pulled! My dad usually does it but he never got around to it so off to the vets! It doesn't cost too much. Its worth it! :)

A lot depends on your birds age, diet and activity level. Young, healthy, active birds typically only need a nail clipping once or twice a year, and "need" is more "less painful for us", as the nails are sharp and no one wants little puncture marks from handling their birds. Sharp nails are not the same as overgrown;) If your bird is not having any mobility problems, isn't getting caught in anything and you aren't tearing up every time he steps up due to razor sharp talons, no need to have them clipped:)

If you were to get one or two manicure perches, you would not have to worry about nail clipping.....and if you mount your manicure perches at food or water dishes, you pretty much assure the'll get used, at least that works well with my feathered friends.....

The type of manicure perch you want to look for are the ones with the rough/sanding surface on the sides and smooth surfaces on the top & bottom.....when I picked up my first manicure perch I wasn't paying attention and got a concrete type that was rough all over and while my guys would use them, they would often try not to because the rough tops irritated the pads of their feet...not knowing/realizing the difference initially, I'd bought the wrong type, but went back and got properly designed perches.....

It's like with anything that has nails (dogs, rodents, birds, even my lizards though they keep theirs filed down by the rocks). If nails get too long on any animal it can hinder mobility and cause pain. I don't know how much it is just for a nail clipping. Ducati needed his beak trimmed as well as his nails when I took him in. I don't know how the prices are where you're at, but here it was supposed to $55. Luckily we have a good vet that all my animals go to so he didn't charge me for that. If he's not letting you clip them I would say take him to the vet. For me even if Ducati let me touch his feet I would take him in, but I'm super paranoid about that.
