Today was Coco's vet apt. I found out I have a "chunky" seemingly healthy bird. He also is older than previously thought. Turns out he is in an import. Which apparently puts him between 25-30 years old and not the 'young' 20 I was told. He had his nails done, wings clipped and beak done. She was quite wonderful. He isn't used to being wrapped up in a towel and she only did that because he was going to bite. He was all fluffed up and his eyes were going crazy. Over all I am happy. The vet took a history from me and then turned her attention to him. She placed his travel carrier on the floor and wanted to get him out without the towel... She took him to the back for assistance with his grooming, but the door wasn't closed and I was able to watch how she handled him.

I got told that I am on the right track and seemed to have done my research. She was surprised I'd only started a week ago. The plan is to take him back in in about 6 months for blood work. She didn't want to do to much as it was their first encounter. She was also happily surprised by how I could handle him and how he came walking across the floor and stepped up on my foot for what she called comfort.

Thanks for all the help thus far and support!

That's great news!!!! So which clinic did you ended up going to???

I took him to the vets that's ONLY 45mins away. I thought it would be better in case of emergencies. Plus I was also referred there.

That's good!!! At least you found one close enough to go to! :)

I think everyone will enjoy this... The local "Bird Lady" referred me to the vet :)
I was shopping for Coco's chop and of course started talking about my boy, who doesn't talk about their birds while grocery shopping for them? And blah blah blah I was asked if I knew the "Bird Lady". So I left her my number and I may now have a local assistance if I ask nicely :)

Good news! But, how did the vet determine that he was an import? Does he have a band with the initials of the entry facility he went through?

Yeah, he is banded. If i remember correctly she explained that the letters correspond to a place and the numbers to his entry date.

Your experience with Coco sounds a lot like mine with George the YCA so many years ago. We learned that he was between 25 and 30 years old, and was in good health, but always was a bit "chunky." George was with me for 40 great years; may you enjoy a similarly long and happy time together with Coco! :)
