Color change?

So I'm just wondering, at what age will we start to see Quincys colors start to change? He's just over 3.5 months old right now.

There are definitely not enough Quincy's photos to my taste It's always a pleasure to see this sweet juv.


Regarding the colors. Unfortunately I haven't witnessed the first months of Cytrynka as she was with her previous family, but the moment we've rehomed her she was already 6mo and at this age she already had yellow spots on her wings. As she was away from me during the holidays, I remember the major change in her plumage to me was the holiday season, so when she was 9mo she was already looking like an adult sun.

Then over time, she became more and more yellow still, but to me the breakthrough was her 8..9months.

My Ollie did not fully feather to his new colors until about 1 year but it gradually happens and you'll notice less green baby frathers as time passes.

If Quincy Is truly a sun (they're often confused with Jendays, who never lose their green) then you'll likely start seeing some yellow around the first molt (6-9 months) and then by a year you should see most of the yellow come in, by 2-3 years old they should be as yellow as they will ever be.

Some suns have a lot of yellow right away when they wean, while other suns have all green and it takes over a year to see the yellow take over the green.

Maybe it's the camera, but kind of looks jenday to me...

The molting can start as early as 4-ish months, but may take much longer, as stated, to reach full adult colors.

If you see other photos of Quincy you can spot some yellow-ish feathers on his wings, so IMHO Quincy is not a Jenday. He might turn out to be "Sunday", but still he's too young to judge. Please see the posted yt video about Jupiter, at his 3months he was soo green you could consider him a jenday, and still turned unquestionable Sun.

So then what details are making you think Quincy might be a Jenday?
For example the bright red areas around his eyepatch seem very "Sunish" to me

Is it possible for a Jenday to have traces of Yellow on the wings? Or the Jenday should have plain green wing feathers?
And see the bright yellow/red pinfeather on his neck? Cytrynka's transition started with single bright pinfeathers surrounded by dull-ish Juv feathers.

I used to own a Jenday...

The differences are subtle but obvious when you know what to look for. Here's a comparison of a Sun Conure vs. Jenday Conure, side by side.

As you can see between them they look pretty similar but definitely have difference in plumage.

-Jendays have a ring of red around the eye
-Jendays will have am orange/red belly that wraps around the head but none on the head, it stays pretty yellow
-Jendays will never usually have any yellow come in on the wings.

-Suns are much more yellow but can have varying degrees of red, usually around the face
- They lose their green plumage on wings as they age.

I had my Jenday for 5 years and he never had a single yellow feather develop on his wings. They stayed green. The only way to know for sure what he is is watch him as he ages.

If he gets lots of yellow on his wings (as pictures above), he;'s a Sun. If he stays mostly green with a little yellow, then he's a 'Sunday' hybrid between the two, which happens. If he stays all green on the wings, he's a Jenday!

It could very well just be the camera, but the red looks more jenday than sun to me.

Do jendays get yellow in the wings? Sometimes. Not normal by any standards! But it has happened.

I have also seen a sun conure that, due to the camera, made the colors appear jenday-ish as a chick but molted into an adult sun conure with no traces of jenday colors as an adult.


I'm not saying that Quincy is a jenday, let alone a hybrid, only that, to my eyes, Quincy does appear to have some jenday colors. And again, I mentioned "maybe it's the camera."


To be honest, the more I look at Quincy, the more jenday Quincy looks to me!


Fastest way to know for sure would be to see Quincy's parents. After that, it's just waiting to molt. If Quincy is in fact pure sun, then I suspect he may be quite red for a normal sun!

I'd bet that Quincy is a jenday- but there's no way to know for sure at this moment. I'd say around month 4 or 5, you should start seeing less green on the back. If it stays green, its a jenday. If it starts to change to yellow (with blends of green and blue on the tips) then its a sun.



Suns start to shed their juvenile feathers at around 6mos. and usually have their full colors by around 1 y/o (after their first full molt). Skittles was 1y 2w when I got him and he already had all his adult feathers.

My 2 cents is that Quincy is a Sun conure, but its too early to tell. Basing it off the red between the eye and the beak and also the specs of yellow on the wings. Does he also have yellow on the tip of his wing(shoulder), near the head? If there is yellow there than I would most definitely assume sun conure. Can never rule out a hybrid either, again too early to tell.
