Hello! I haven't been here on a while, so sorry! I have a question. My friend across the country wants to give me his Quaker parrot, not because there is somthing wring with it, but because he is busy and wants someone who can care for it better. Im like, heck yeah! But the problem is, according to the owner, this parrot doesn't like female owners. Which means I might have a harder time with him...I'm wondering if, with patience, it is possible to get him to not despise females?🤣 Does anyone have experience with this? Thank you!

I adopted a Quaker who had been owned by a female all his life ( I am also a woman) and while he warmed up to me eventually, he has never liked men. My brothers, dad etc. he definitely dislikes despite their attempts to win him over. That being said, JJ was 20+ years old when I got him so he was very set in his ways. If you were the bird’s sole caretaker, I think there is a good chance that you could eventually win it over. It would just most likely take a lot of time and patience.

There's always a possibility, especially if you're always the giver of nothing but good things. Or, sometimes they just decide who they like on their own. My YNA Baxter was a known male hater... until she chose me. Game over. She's still very particular about who she will allow to be with her, but she's a daddy's girl through and through. Not to say that it's guaranteed to work out, but if you go for it, remember - Patience in all things and interactions.

Another thing to consider, check the legalities in your state. Because of the potential destructive nature of wild flocks, quakers are prohibited to own in my state. Dumb law, they're great little birds, but it is what it is. So sadly, if they find themselves in rescues, they aren't allowed to be adopted out and become permanent residents of the rescue. :(

Good point about checking on the legality of owning a Quaker parrot. I forget that they are considered an invasive species in some states making them illegal to own.

my state allows them!! Im so lucky!!! yes, i have met this parrot before i moved up here, and hes super nice! He at least tolerated me, and I think I could win him over...he is 6 years old and so cute! I didn't notice much of a difference in the way he acted between the owner, he bit everyone like normal lol...I think the owner has family whom the bird doesn't like for some reason. It is a male bird too.
