Conure wont go into his cage--advice please!!

I adopted a green cheek conure. he is 4 years old. he is not completly hand tame but he flys on my shoulder. i can only handle him when he flys to me. if i try to pick him up when he is outside the cage he usually just flys away. i do not like to leave him outside the cage when im not home simply for his own safety. when im home he is alway out. is there anything i can do to make him go to his cage on demand? ive owned cockatiels and budies but this is my first parrot. advice please

Have him clipped during training would help!

he has never been clipped before. is it fair to clip him now?

i just find that clipping wings results in injuries because as they grow back they fly into everything

Once you have him trained then let them grow back if you want. Having them clipped makes training a lot easier.

I think what Mikey is saying is that they are easier to train clipped. Very difficult to do anything w/a bird that flys away. If you can't get him in his cage now, later you may have bigger problems. My amazon isn't clipped, when I want to get him in his cage I give him a step up command & take him to his cage. Sometimes he doesnt want to go he'll fly off, I go get him again. If he flys off 2nd time, I leave the room & close the door. A few minutes later I go back & try again. Usually that does the trick.

Have you had him long? Does he step up?

It really depends on how much experience you have with birds to decide which bird needs to be clipped during training. 3 of my tiels have never been clipped during training. My pair of Eclectus was never clipped, Dixie my too was never clipped. I've clipped Willie once and it was because he was too big to let fly in the house. I don't like clipping unless they need to be trained then im all for clipping. Having raised baby birds in the past and personally trained all of them myself, I still clip my babies. Then I let them grow back out again and they're wonderful!!! I used to keep a few of the babies i've raised.

im just worried that clipping his wings will make him unhappy. im going to try by best to train him without clipping. clipping may be a last resort. thank you for you advice
