Hand raised Alexandrine Parrot
Hi,
My names Dan and Baillee is my little alexandrine. I have had Bailee for a week now and absolutely love it (not sure of sex). Its hand reared and will accept treats gently from my hand but I dont think we have full trust yet cause I still get nipped if I try for the "up'' command. Any tips on how I can gain some trust would be great :).
Otherwise I have a dog and reef aquarium and am a marine biologist who loves everything about the oceans.
thanks

hey Dan, Im about to get my new alexandrine, Jimmy, in next day or so. He is hand reared and dna tested male, I'm a bit nervous! Can't really offer any advice obviously but I suppose as your bird gets to know you the trust will grow. Everyone I've spoken has told me to get The Parrot Problem Solver, it apparently gives good advice. Good luck and we'll keep in touch

[FONT=&quot]Welcome, great forum, congrats with your new addiction.

Top on your list, a visit to an avian vet is a must. Let the bird be checked over, peace of mind for a healthy bird.

[FONT=&quot]Baillee must have time to settle down and adjust. Just imagine how many new things the bird has encountered, in the last week. So many new faces and voices, it must be so scary.
To gain your trust could take days, weeks, months even years. Each and every bird is so different. He obviously feels a comfort zone is his cage.
Sit near the cage, talking and singing to the bird. Let him become familiar with your voice. Leaving the cage door open, offer him treats through the bars at first. When he willingly accepts them, try placing a treat near the open door. Eventually he will starts taking the treats from the door, make no attempt to touch him. When he does come out, he will probably climb around on the cage. Let him explore in his own time. To get him back in, place a treat inside the cage, making sure it's visible.
Good luck

Hi all and thanks for your opinions/advice. I will be finding an avian vet this week definately.
Bailee made her (well as far as I have been told) noises today as a black cockatoo was perched at my house, too cute :).
I am thinking of giving clicker training a try with Bailee, I have used this method before but with Border Collies so always new experiences.
Cheers
Dan

Welcome to the forum!!! :)

welcome! trust takes time but in the end its worth it. a great way to earn trust is slip a favorite treat in his cage when you walk by. also, it sounds crazy, but you could rea to your bird, its very relaxing for both owner and bird! good luck!:)
