My pair of kakarikis had their first egg hatch two days ago, it was a healthy little baby. I checked the mother and baby this morning and they were fine and the baby was squeaking. But now that we check when the mothers out of the coop theres no baby there, only two eggs, we cant hear any noise either. Did the mother kill it? Or did she bury it for warmth? I´ve tried searching the topic but I haven´t been able to find anything, shes very friendly and this has never occured before. I dont dare to poke around in the nest because im afraid im gonna hurt the babies.

Any advice is much appreciated

She very likely burried it. I think you need to speak to a breeder as its very likely if this is her first family that she is inexperienced and may make mistakes...a breeder might be able to tell you what to do...and advise you how to line her nestbox next time round if indeed she continnues to bury babies...also be careful when viewing the nest that you do not disturb her as this also results in her trying to hide the babies...I wouldnt disturb the nest without first speaking to a competent breeder. Best of Luck hope you get some babies who survive

Yes I´ve tried not too but my family don´t really listen to me when I tell them off, but you´re saying its just buried then? Or does that mean it has suffocated? I will see if I can contact the breeder we got her from.

Also the nest is lined with sawdust that our veterinary clinic recommended we use.

Thanks so much for responding so quickly

You might be better off posting in the breeding section, but here's my opinion.

First time parents aren't always very good. They don't know how to take care of the babies and will kill them, unfortunately it's just what happens. Also, I wouldn't use sawdust, it's too fine and not good for their lungs, especially for the baby. Ideally you want to use aspen shavings as bedding. It looks like this.

I believe you can also use pine, but other wood shavings aren't safe.
