vet said harrisons high potency with added greens is best

that is the same diet for hycinth macaws which need more fat? Electus need low fat? I dont get it?

I do not agree with the High Potency! I feed the regular and TOP's plus Volkman seed blend for eclectus, but mostly fresh fruits and veggies.

Fruits i hear so much flack about

my electus are less picky eaters compared to macaws which will try something if its not sweet or fatty will spit it out right at you

I get the Volkman's from "My safe bird store" not sprouted, it is just seed but no additives or dyes especially for eclectus. I do sprout for my birds, as well a myself.

Fruits are fine and needed for eclectus, today mine had blackberries, raspberries, pomegranates, mango, grapes and apple. I try to keep it varied from day to day.

A couple of companies do make specialized diets for certain species.


Some eclectus actually do fine on Harrison's High Potency. Others not so well. It really depends on the birds.

My Damsyl is such a picky eater. I cant seem to get her off of the seeds she ate for over 6 months while sitting in a pet store. I adopted her because my favorite color is RED and she had a hard time plucking. Now that she is movedin with us for a month now, I am finding that she loves apples but slings all other fruit and veggies. I try and fail to get her to change from seeds. I have been getting her fruit and veggie berries from Lafeber's which seem to be better than mopping up her display of sling play. Any other advice to get her to eat more healthy?

Right now, I have gotten her to stop plucking and now her blue body is coming back. She if finally getting used to my husband and has stopped biting him. She perks up everytime he walks in the front door.

She is now flying to find me instead of squawking. And she just began to fly over to me and perching on my arm in mid air.

But I really need to get her off of the seeds. She gets really mean if she doesnt get them. I will give them only if she does something spectactular such as flying over to me instead of squawking. But I want to provide her nummy freash foods instead of processed pellet balls.

Any advice would help bunches!

Damsyl, have you tried sprouted seeds? Have you tried vegetables? What about grains and legumes?

Yes. I have tries Kale, Green Beans, Romaine Lettuce, All berries, oranges, pears, basically all fruit and veggies except bean sprouts.

My Vet says that I need to feed her Harrisons, but Damsyl doesnt like it.

I hate feeding her fresh fruit and veggies as I keep getting fruit flys, even though I clean her cage every day.

I love being able to give her the best food possible. I might try to feed her rice and beans. She loves natural apple sauce, cranberrry juice, V8 juice. I know this as she grabs my glass everytime I am drinking breakfast. LOL

V8 has a ridiculously high sodium content -- I really would not let her drink that.

As far as the little bugs. It suck and it does happen, but you can put out a jar of cider vinegar with just a little dish soap in it, cover the jar with saran wrap and poke holes in it. I just leave a jar out all the time and change it out when I've caught too many bugs, and now I never see them flying around the house anymore.

You can try eating fresh fruits and vegetables with her. Zephyr gets jealous when I'm eating something that he doesn't have and then he always wants it. And try different textures. Mash things, grate them, chop them big and small. Keep trying until you find the way she prefers her foods.

Try scrambling egg whites or cooking up some oatmeal (with just water, no added salt or anything) and serving her veggies in a warm mash -- some birdies seem to like a warm meal.

Zephyr gets cooked brown rice and cooked beans every morning and loves it.

I will try that for the bugs. I have wine vinager for my salads. Ill let you know how that works. I will also try different textures and will not allow her to drink any more V8 even though it is low sodium type.
Although I have had parrots before. (Nandy Conure) Damsyl is very different and seems to love to eat with me. Which is nice because we love to eat as a family.

Yeah, we all eat as a family too! The birdies are always snatching food off our plates (or our forks, or out of our mouths.. )

But yeah, even the low sodium V8 still has a pretty hefty amount. A serving of it is 7% of what an adult human should have for a day, let alone a bird (not that a bird drinks a whole serving, but just showing as an example). It doesn't take a lot for salt toxicity in animals. Not gonna lie though, spicy V8 is a guilty pleasure of mine even though it's total fake-healthy.
