so im sitting on my couch on thursday night getting ready to go to dinner ..it was my bday. and a neighbor stopped in,he says that a mutual friends dad has a big green bird...and its mean. i said oooh birds arent mean they are just scared, most of the time. he said for something like 15 years this macaw has been in an enclosure....in a corner...outside. being in florida it gets really hot and in the winter we get frost. my neighbor said kinda laughing that squalls and rodents including a raccoon has gotten into the enclosure..more than once and that sometimes the people living on the property spray it with a hose. i walked away and started tearing up. now i have never seen this bird and im on the property every day..theres a pig no one seems to feed or care about as well..so i do. i need to get this bird...poor thing. If anyone has advice please help... thanks for listening.:(

Maria, I feel your pain and I'm truly sorry for the bird and for you. The neglected pig is obviously not the only pig on the property, but I'm sure the four legged pig has better character than the two legger.

We can't advise you to perform an illegal seizure. My advice is to introduce yourself to the legal owner of the bird and do your best to reason with him. Tell him you are concerned for the bird's welfare, maybe he will consider allowing you to give the bird a better home. With out being confrontational you may hint that the proper authorities may be notified if changes aren't made in the bird's best interest. Unfortunately, in most cases the law is firmly on the side of the owner unless the negligent circumstances are extremely severe.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope you find some legal means of helping the poor bird.

Update..I went and talk to the owner.he agreed to let me help him get the bird a rust free enclosure and he agreed to let me work with the bird. The b&g is soooo sweet. I'm guessing he just doesn't like men. I am allowed any time to come over without hassle and if I want I can go in the enclosure as well anytime. He doesn't want the bird inside..but it's a start and a small victory towards a better life for birdy. I didn't want to go the illegal route either I guess I was just really upset at first. As for Howard the pig..they are raising it for food, I told him he still should feed it and give adequate shelter..he shrugged. So I will continue to care for him as well :)

Your such a good person. Its sad that he does not look after the animals pro pally but at least his views on the animals welfare seems to be changing. That's so great that the b&g was a sweetie. I hope the training goes well and keep us informed. :D

Maria, thanks for the update! I'm glad you were able to help the B&G, I'm sure everything you do will be greatly appreciated and enjoyed by the bird. Poor Howard, I wish you could change his future too.

It's infuriating to want to help a creature that doesn't have the ability to change it's own circumstances. I have a lot of respect for you for trying to help.

Please let us know how it goes.

I love you, Maria. So does the Rickeybird; he just doesn't know it. Thank you for doing all that good stuff.

I see gabby every morning and most nights. I clean the poop, I change out paper.I give fresh food and water. the other night someone was burning tires..near the cage..the next morning gabby didn't look good. I buried the fire and move his cage .but after all this rain my poor boy is still exposed.to all the elements, in a way. I cry a lot thinking about him. but his owner won't give him up. so I do my best to make his life better...and he loves me and I know it. the carpet you see in this photo has been there for over ten years...its stuck on and smells.and I'm working on improving it...but money is tight and his owner also owns a pig that I care for.

this is Howard and he got out during our rainstorm the other day and his owner looked at me like who cares. Damn it I cared. he knows his name and knows the sound of my car means food..I work at a restaurant and all the scrapes go to him..as well as the pig feed I buy.

Floridians know the rain has been bad...I trek thru two feet of water twice a day to feed Howard and gabby...

Thank you. I'm told I'm crazy. I'm told why bother. At the end of the day..I feel good even if Howard knocked me down..in mud and poop..I still greet him with a smile. Even when gabby bite me..I still greet him with a smile.

Maria, you are a sweetheart! What you do for Gabby and Howard every day is so special and I'm sure they show their gratitude every day. I can't understand why the owner insists on keeping them while you care for them but at least he allows you to improve their lives.

Sometimes animals are trophies to people with money. Sad truth.

Maria bless you, this is so sad, heartbreaking. I don't know what to say. Thank you for being the loving person that you are.

Good on ya, for doing this and sticking with them.

Bless you for doing your best for these poor things. Praying for a change of heart from the owner.

How about saying Gabby needs vet care and estimate cost + bit or it amounts to cruelty to deny this. If people have to put their hand in their pocket it is sometimes enough to give a change of heart?

Thank you for helping them.
Have you tried contacting Animal Control?

Basic needs are being met, quality of life doesn't count!
Last thing we want is to break the relationship with the owner, IMO!
