Dirt devil vacuum safe?

Is my new dirt devil vaccum safe to use around birds? It has a state of California warning that says to wash hands after use and it has a chemical smell when used

I would just use it in an area with good air flow.

My Quaker thought the dirt devil was terrifying and I had to hide it with a towel or dirt devil cozy. Scaaary!
