Do any of your Macaws take naps with both feet clinched into fists?

This is how Salsa often naps (with both feet clinched):

:11: That looks uncomfortable as hell! Does he ever fall off "perched" like that?

No, Niko has never done that. When he naps he sits on one foot, other foot tucked under and his head tucked into his back.

Actually he did used to fall off his perch on occasion. But it never happened when he was asleep or napping. It happened when he'd slide back to poop - poor Salsa :( One main reason it happened is because Terrie used to manicure his claws to a point where they were blunted into short, rounded stumps. So they were that way when he arrived here. As such, I allowed his claws to grow out a bit and I let him have somewhat of a point on each of them for traction. So he's now able to effectively grasp onto perches when he poops without the chance of slipping off backwards ;)

That's how each of my others sleep except for Zaf. Zaf does the clinch thing also, only he does it with one foot while holding the other one up.

haha how interesting!!!!
nope, fargos clenches one foot in the air, then holds onto the perch with the other
salsa is just a dare devil ;)

haha, yeah he's a bit different in various ways I guess ;)

I have never seen that before, very unusual i think???

I have a 40 yr old tres marias amazon that does that and sometimes he sleeps only on one foot.

I'm not sure. That's why I posted about it. Zaf does it too, but only with one foot at a time. Considering that your Remington doesn't do it I geuss it's not typical GW behavior.

I would not think this is too common. I have heard of most birds who stand on one foot while clinching their other foot into a fist and holding it close to the body but never this. Very strange. Thanks for sharing. Joe

Very odd. No arthritis? Sunny sleeps on a swing with a hanging toy clutched to her chest.

That's actually really cute lol!! It doesn't look too comfortable though!

never seen mine do that, BUT, the Hahn's will go in her coconut and lay on her back & snooze with both feet in the air

I really think she's a "half bubble off" sometimes :30:

The Blue and Gold at my bird store will. He is perfectly healthy from what I know. :)

HAHA! Sounds like a funny bird ;)

Plax, I was just thinking (I do that sometimes, lol). Perhaps Salsa naps like that because it takes all the pressure off the bottom of his feet?

It may look uncomfortable to us, but he's a healthy boy, and maybe he realized it's comfy for HIM. :)

I admit I cracked up laughing really hard when you said he fell off his perch when he pooped due to his nails....but this is so different.

Like when we lay on the floor to watch TV and rest our head on our arm, elbow on the ground. :D

Boy, I'm never seen that before. Mine often take naps during the day, but not like that. I would think maybe his feet hurt or he would rather have smaller perches. My boys often sleep while sitting on their water dish. Sometimes I put warm water in their dish for that.

Could be, Wendy... I'm not sure yet. More often than not he doesn't do the foot thing when he naps. Still, it happens often enough to be notable.

One thing about Salsa that's different from my others - well, one of the many things - is that he usually takes food and treats handed to him with his foot rather than with his beak. It kind of reminds me of the way a monkey would take food items from a person's hand with its hand. So Salsa seems to be a bit of a different bird in some respects.

I suppose that's possible. I've seen no other signs of it though.
