Duskies: Gizmo & Niko, hatched 3/12 & 5/12; pineapple GCC: Skittles, 5/10/13; Pan Am: Harley, 1/27/13; CAG: Maalik, 7/27/13; Eclectus: Ziggy, 4/4/04; BHC: Walter 6 y; baby Jardine's: Bogart-May!
My 2 duskies have FINALLY grown out their flight feathers. However, neither one has even made an attempt to fly. I don't believe they were ever flighted before I got them, so I've begun to wonder if they actually need to be taught how to fly. One is 16 months old, and the other is 14 months old.

Auggie was clipped very young too and was when I got him. I never clipped him and he took to flying once his feathers came in.

He didn't need to be *taught* but it did take him time to get confident in flying - now he flies all over.

Give it time.

I had a feeling that I did. Thank you!

I had some fledgelings (not parrots), and they started flapping on their own to exercise their wings. I don't know if they would have figured it our on their own, but I helped them along by gently tossing them. I started with small distances like a couple feet, or onto the bed, and as their skills grew I would throw them farther.

You are welcome giz. Glad I could help!

I had to teach my conure to fly. My boyfriend and I, as Reginald's flight feathers came in, would set him on his out-of-his-cage perch and tempt him to jump onto our fingers by offering him a treat if he jumped. We moved our fingers farther and farther away from his perch, forcing him to use his wings to glide, then to flap and fly.

This is so odd. Is this a conure thing? When I had baby eclectus, I never had to teach them how to fly, they learned it all on their own. So did both my Amazons.

Not so long ago I got my Ripley, who had ALWAYS been clipped. Even he taught himself how to fly, now that his flight feathers have regrown. :)

They will fly once they've figured out their flight feathers are back! BUT sometimes you need to give them a nudge. I had a few babies that refused to fly period....
