Paddy male 8 yr.old GCC Cuddlebug, Emmy female parrotlet RIP Buddy 20 yr. blue headed conure adopted 10/23 Paddy RIP 10/23
Paddy often hangs on the side of his cage nearest Emmy.(when in his cage) When out he often gets all over her cage with an open beak she does the same. Sometimes he grabs her toys and shakes them (still outside her cage) When we first got him he tried to nip at her so we kept them saperate. Sometimes we have let them out for a tiny bit but never next to each other. We are beginning to think they want to be friends. Paddy is a GCC, Emmy a parrotlet major size difference. I have always been a nervous parront any ideas? Bonita :rainbow1:

i would allow very closely supervised play dates with them together to see how they get along, on neutral ground, NOT each others cage tops. let them approach each other and make sure to watch for any aggressive signs--fluffed mantle, tail flaring, lunging, etc. and be ready to separate if need be.

they may not want each other around the cages, and plets are known to be cage territorial, and same with GCC. so may be a good option to keep them away from each others cage in general.

Thanks so much Dally. Does it seem like Paddy has friendly interests to you? I will do the play dates. Paddy has tried to slowly step near Emmy but she flies away I can tell she's scared .If they became friends do different species ever try to mate? Thanks again for your help. Bonita :rainbow1:

depends on the bond... but, you dont have to worry about interbreeding between your species luckily if they DID bond in that way... its just very unlikely they would develop that kind of bond

i'd let them take their own time. do they have a playgym you can rearrange or maybe put in another room they can meet?

are they both flighted or clipped? keep that in mind for planning too

my female lovebird is actually in love with my friends male conure.

but keep in mind, it may not work out or maybe they will just tolerate each other. just be watchful

paddy seems like he could be interested, but still watch his reactions and interactions with emmy. emmy is tiny but those plets have some pretty impressive spunk. she sounds like she is a little intimidated by him and may react out of that, which might trigger a negative response out of him.

i would let them go to each other from a distance first, make sure they have space to avoid each other if they choose to

Notice in dailytsuka's pics, that the conure is keeping his beak up, towards the other birds beak and face. If you see this, it may be safe to introduce them on neutral territory with very close supervision. If however, you see the conure aiming his head downward, towards the legs, then separate them immediately...it will take more time. Going towards the legs should be interpreted as threatening behavior. The conure might not even be showing any outward signs of aggression, and still try to grab a leg or toe, which could leave a nasty wound or even an amputation. Take it super slow. They could turn out to be the best of friends, but because of size difference all the precautions should be taken. Good luck :)

Thank You both so much. Paddy and Emmy both only try to touch beaks. Yes I do have a play gym it is a little large scale for Emmy though. I worry about Paddy being Emotionaly fulfilled but I don't want to have a mate . I lost 2 parakeets to egg binding and never want a chance of that again .I was told by the pet shop they wouldn't mate without a nest box. I was devastated. Bonita :rainbow1:

Just keep watching them together. I have two budgies and a lovebird living in the same cage with free access by my gcc Parry, and I never had any problems. I also have a cage free cockatiel basically living on the top of their cage. :) My lovie and one of the budgies are in love - I've posted a thread about that before. :) So it all depends of your birds character.
