Einstein a 17 year old BFA
Penny a 21 yr old CAG
I have recently added a 21 year old CAG to my household, my sister asked me to take her as I have a BFA who will be 17 in July since she was 9 months old.

Einstein the BFA has an Avian Adventures Mediana dometop, she had a playtop, but when we moved we got her a new cage, and thought the dometop gave her more inside room as we work all day. Now for Penny the CAG she has been in the same Kings cage since she was 9 weeks old (not sure of dimensions about 24/30' sq, roughly 1/2 the size of the Mediana.

I really want to get Penny into a bigger cage with more perches, and easier dish removal. What are your thoughts for CAG? we also have a really nice tall Manzanita Tree Stand for the girls to hang out on, so for Einstein enjoys it more then Penny, she really likes her cage or my hubby. :)

I think what it boils down to in my opinion is which one is easier to clean. I have both so I am partial to the play top style. I like them both however my Gracie enjoys playing with all her toys and things on too where the dome top is only convertible and a perch. I think the dome top is a better looking cage. Just my opinion though.

I like the visual of a dome top and the added height in inside play space, but we have a playtop for utility. Our heat and air conditioning vents are up high, and when the air handling system is blowing a lot (very hot or very cold days) I put the solid tray in place to reduce the downdraft into Dexter's cage. He also likes his playtop and spends most of his time out of the cage up there, even though he has lots of other options.

With me, its all about the large access door. A full height door follows right after as big a cage as possible! As stated above, if your parrot has a suite of toys and you like easy to clean - its a play top everyday.

Dome top allows a lot more light into the cage. So, I think, it is important where the cage is going to stand.
I would not put the Play top cage in the dark area, that's for sure.
One of my Zons likes to walk circles upside down on the top of the dome top, so I think she would vote for the Dome...... :)

I like my dome top King's cage, and Perjo seems to as well. She hangs out as high as possible quite often, and sleeps on her favorite circle soft perch which sits above door height b/c of the dome top.

The only thing I do not like about it (and I'm guessing this is the same for a lot of cages) is the bowl doors are solid (understandably) and you cannot see your FIDs very easy when they sit in those spots. I'm actually considering 3d printing a clear replica of said doors and so I can see my Perjo when see eats or drinks.

That's not just a CAG thing I guess. Perjo does her best bat impersonation every day like that.

For my birds I vote for the Play Top, but that's because they don't spend any time to speak of inside their cage. They don't even sleep in them. But if my birds had to spend a good part of their time inside a cage, I would have went with a dome top. Just my opinion, and works for my house. :) Best of luck.

Never had a dome top. Amy has a large play top..she likes when I open her nummy bowl door to remove the bowl, she likes to come out of her house THAT way, instead of the front door lol. She'll then climb up to the top where there is a perch and food/water bowls and toys and bang her bells.

Its pretty easy for me to clean it too :D

I am partial to dome tops. My grey loves climbing and hanging upside down from the top...and climbing up high when the tops open. It gives a lot of space inside as well..I also like the way they look. :)

I discovered that both Peter Pan and Roger who is no longer with us preferred dome tops because Rogers first cage was a play top but he never liked it and Peter Pan wouldnt go near it so I purchased a dome top for Roger too who happily lived there for the rest of his days. Now its home to Mr Biggles. I still have the play top cage so maybe some day I will find a parrot happy to live in it. I never use the dome top as an open perch though as I fear an accident happening with the perch. I saw this happen with a friends parrot once so instead I attach a perch on top of one side on the cage if its open and I open just one side of the dome which is then used (especially by Peter Pan) more as a landing platform. Their playstamd is seperate.

I have the preference for play-tops as it gives more surface area for a bird that has has lots of time out of the cage.

I have both. I think I prefer the dome top, with a separate play stand for out of cage time. But my situation is different. Parkers cage is in the basement away from everyone. So I NEED a playstand in the living room. As long as we are home, Parker is out with us.

I vote for Dome Top; and big front door; and stainless steel; and outside covered feed cups. Whoever designed those feed cups was a genius. I don't even have to use a seed guard....no mess ever under cage. ,And stainless is soooo easy to wipe clean. We love, our cage, although we spend most of our time on two play gyms on the screened porch. :orange:

Thanks guys, I am leaning towards the dometop, mostly for the extra space, and the fact that we have a tree, and playstands downstairs for the birds to hang out on, I work all day, so we have to keep the birds in their cages while we are gone. Einstein loves her dometop, she does circles too :) she also likes to pretend she is a bat, when we have company, so they can't reach her.
