Hi there!
I would like to know how Ekkies are as pets. There is a male redsided Eclectus at my local rescue, I have made friends with the lady that runs it this past week. I originally contacted her to volunteer, but she doesn't have more than she can handle right now that she needs help. Anyway this guy was surrendered because the owners had severe allergies, and he had to rehome all of his birds. He's two years old, very kind, gentle, quiet(parrot speaking ;) ). He comes with a huge cage and lots of toys already, the previous owners were well educated and took good care of him. I have a BFA:green: that I got about two months ago, who is not hand tame(I'm working with him). I also have a peach faced lovebird. I have two small children as well. So looking to see if an eclectus is a good fit for our family. :)

Thanks!

I love my Ekkie girl Ruby, and she is the perfect pet for me. That being said, I have teenage boys and NO small children. Ekkie bites can be very vicious and painful and can rip the skin badly. Ruby has only bitten me once in 3 years, but it was a very bad bite that nearly needed stitches. They have a powerful beak, but their body language is very easy to read. It really just depends on the bird. I would warn you to very closely watch your children around him.

To me ekkies are a great fit! They're wonderful birds but to me, they tend to freak easily so I don't know how they will do around young children since I don't do kids...lol....As long as you can provide their nutritional needs you'll be fine. They tend to do better on fresh food then pellets.

My girls won't be allowed to handle or pet the Ekkie until I fully trust him. They've been nipped by my sassy lovebird, so they have learned that birds, can bite. haha! They are extremely gentle with animals as I have taught them from a very young age. I did read that about ekkies that they can stress easily in a loud and or busy environment. My girls are pretty easy going, but they are children, so there is noise. :)

Well I am sooo disappointed. I spent several days at her house, and she asked me if I was interested in Tango, which I was surprised because she said someone from out of state was going to adopt him. But she said she hadn't hear from her nor had an application filled out from her yet. So I said yeah, filled out her adoption application. She said everything sounded good, she just wanted to visit my house. Well I called her tonight to stop by, and she said well Tango isn't here(the eclectus) she adopted him out the lady from out of state!! I can't believe it! I'm soo disappointed, I cried. :(

My male bird is just a joy atm.(he is only 4-5 months old) He snuggles with me in bed and spends a lot of time on his play gym.
I cant wait to get my Aviator Harness so I can take him outside to the park so he can get some sunshine and so he gets some mental fulfilment.
