Hello Everyone,

So it looks like I will be relocating for work on a 2-Year Contract. I will be required to move from my large home into an apartment for this period of time. And while I have found one that will allow birds. And Echo is beyond quiet within my current home. I am wondering if anyone knows anything I could or should be doing to ease the stress of transition (and any noises).

Does anyone here with an Ekkie live within an apartment? Any Tips? I will have hundreds of toys to keep him amused. Even went with a 2-Room so could convert the second into a 'mini-aviary' to give him plenty of space for whenever I am at work. My main concern is whether the trip will make him unduly stressed and cause changes in his mild mannered behaviors?

Any POSITIVE comments appreciated, I know they can do well in APTs,

I live with an eclectus in an Apartment. I don't know if I have any tips though :( My apartment is double bricked because its old so that helps with the noise a bit. But I find that Audrey is really loud when I have all the windows and doors open so I try to avoid that as much as possible, because she screams!

Heaps of toys are definitely going to help keep him entertained, also if you don't have it, get a foraging ball, with the right stuff inside, it can keep my girl entertained for a good while!

This may be an observation for my little guy only, do you find that when you have her locked up in cage she is quieter? I am hoping that everything goes alright with it.

Like I said, I am considering turning the spare room into an aviary. I am wondering if he would be louder if allowed to roam inside that room when I am not home, or if I am better off keeping inside of cage with plenty of toys for the 4 - 8 Durations of work?

GOOD LUCK hahahahahahahaha, Eclectus can almost raise the dead with their screams and yells. No, I wish I had some positive suggestions, but the only things I can offer is possibly loading him up with toys to keep him busy. But the problem with Mac for me wasn't when I was gone, it was when I was home. He would flock call any time I left the room to go outside as well as when I would enter the house and he would see or hear me. I'm sure had I lived in an apartment, I would have been evicted. Hopefully you will get some receptive neighbors who love birds and willing to tolerate a little noise. I would also suggest walking around outside your apartment with your bird and allow him to meet the neighbors. This will give you an idea how receptive they will be right off.

The only time I have ever heard him be loud is when there are 4 - 5 people in same room all talking. And at that point he is simply trying to be heard. If he stays at the level he is now, I have absolutely nothing to worry about since dogs are way louder.

My concern is if sudden change (loss of one of caretakers), new environment, and to be locked up for 8-Hours a day (vs. normal 3 - 4 Hours) will play a role in changing up his quiet behavior. I suppose I can always return home on lunch breaks for couples of minutes to play and let him stretch. Cage I have is huge, and I can create an aviary.

You also need to be concerned about him beginning to pluck or over-preen. When Mac went from being out of his cage most of the time to being locked up for 8 hours a day, he started to over-preen, which also turned into plucking which resulted from boredom and turned into a habit.

So the more foraging toys you have in his cage the better. Also shreadable toys will also help.

I live in an apartment with my Lulu. Overall she's very quiet. When I first moved in I was extremely paranoid because I thought that everyone would be able to hear her when she did scream. But so far she's fine. I made sure to not put her cage near any shared walls just to put my mind at ease. When it's just her and I at home I almost forget she's there because she's so quiet but whenever I have people over she gets really excited and will occasionally call out if things get too loud

It will be a hard change for him. But as long as you keep him busy and entertained in those extra hours in his cage, he should adjust ok!
