Hi there,
Me again. How does his feather condition look? He is new to me but I believe his diet was decent prior to me. He’s just a baby but he was weaned 2 months ago and he was on chop after that. He does not look as shiny and smooth as some of the other eclectus I’ve seen. I know his beak color will change some more but what about feather colors? Will he lighten up with age? Smooth out? Is the darkness from stress bars/banding?

Hi there, how often are you giving him baths? My Ekkie was a little on the dull side until I started giving him baths.

Also the different sub species of Ekkie’s have different coloration. I read this somewhere on here with the information that others sent to me.

ChrisMD is very good with Ekkie information. I haven’t seen him on here much. Hopefully he’ll chime in.

He’s an SI, about 6 months old. I’ve only had him a few days but so far he’s gotten a water bottle spritz every day but he doesn’t seem interested in preening himself at all. He’ll have little white fluffs sticking out all over and he just leaves them there 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nico is also a Solomon island Ekkie as well. He feather plucks so it’s hard to tell but here are some picks of his feathers. He loves to sit in the sun!

looks like he has started over preening. The edges are frayed. If he has stopped that over preening, you won't be able to tell till he molts.

But Definitely be providing tons of preening toys, the great diet that you are, offer misting by fine mist sprayed up let water fall back down on him. Thus often encourages normal preen response. As well as offer baths.

Trying to increase confidence and self directed Behavior.

And getting them outside when weather permits. In safe trsvel cage, or very well secured cage, including bottom tray and roll out to light shade and stay with. Ha I f hour couple times a week is enough to get benefits. But more is great, good fir mood, and vitamin d and feathers.

I think eclectus are supposed to have velvety smooth, more fur like feathers. I’ve never seen the dark outer edges on eclectus feathers. It seems to me that something is going on with them.
