Female indian ringneck
Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out for advice about my female parrot. Earlier this year, around March 2025, she laid an egg but then abandoned it. After that, she started scratching herself constantly and seemed very uncomfortable.

At that time, she was mostly just eating and sleeping, and would scream in pain while scratching, almost as if she was plucking her own feathers. She has lost feathers from her neck down to her belly, and now her bare skin is visible.

The good news is that now she is active again. She plays, eats well, and drinks water normally. But she still scratches herself and continues to lose feathers, and I’m really worried — especially since winter is just a few months away.

I’ve also posted a video recorded on 10 July 2025 showing her condition.

If anyone has any experience or suggestions, please let me know. Is this hormonal, a skin infection, mites, or stress-related? Should I see an avian vet?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

None of us are qualified to give real medical advice for birds. Can you bring her to an avian vet? Any vet that treats birds, even livestock, like chickens? Perhaps she has a parasite or a skin disorder that's making her uncomfortable.

Agreed!
Are any of these references helpful?
Certified Avian Vets
If none are near you...
Avian Veterinarians
In my opinion, any of the vets listed here should be better than a regular vet.
International contacts, too.
If none are near you, maybe you could call and ask for a recommendation for somebody in your area.
And... sometimes, distant vets will offer brief thoughts or advice...
Or... sometimes I find a place to start just by Googling "avian veterinarian near ((your location))"
Or maybe a local breeder might help... again, maybe Google?
I will hold you and your darling in my meditations and prayers.
