Parrots
I have a beautiful 4 year old brown throated conure named Charlie. Just bought him on April 18 2015
Its been kind of hard changing Charlie diet. Been trying different chops and mashes but no luck. He just picks around everything to get his tomatoes grapes or seeds. Tried peas cucumber mango lettuce brown rice but no luck. Finally I tried giving him some watermelon and after spitting it out the first time he loved it. Yay now it won't just be the same 2 fruits and veggies over and over. Gonna do some shopping for him today or tomorrow lets see what new foods we pick up :)...:)

My new severe macaw only ate sunflower seeds and crack corn..she doesn't like most of things I try to feed her. Afraid of all new things. Try steamed sweet potatoes or apples or crunchy carrot sticks. Those things my macaw will kinda be interested in...good luck. Mine also like watermelon, but I'm in Florida and it's hot right now. Lol

Sounds like a good idea I haven't cooked or steamed any of his veggies he might like it. Gotta keep trying new things to find out what he likes. I just wish he wasn't so picky lol :)

My ekkie loves his rice flavoured with curry or chili flakes..I think they may all be spoiled because if I forget to flavour with some kind of spice, I get dirty looks. You could try that as well to see if it tempts him:)

First of all, congrats on the new "baby"! Isn't it fun getting to know each other?

Funny how hard it is to get our birds to eat such GOOD food! I found a "soak and simmer" at our bird farm that is fantastic. Every night I cook it in the rice cooker (set on a timer) and it is ready in the morning. My little ones love it. It has all sorts of beans / legumes in it. I also feed them: broccoli, apple, mango, peas, carrots, scrambled eggs (in small amounts) and who knows what else.

I put everything in a bowl. If there is something NEW or GOOD for my birds (and they just don't agree with me) I will place a couple of sunflower seeds strategically on and around the item. This kind of forces them to acknowledge that it exists, which is always the first step. The sunflower seeds are VERY limited and just provided to prove how much fun the new food is.

Also, I offer new foods over and over and over and....you get it right? Battle of the wills and all. I do think I am a battle or two ahead in the "you will eat fresh food" fight, but I have certainly not won the war.

Kudos to you for working so hard. It is amazing how HARD it can be. I cook way way more for the birds than my family and it sounds like you are really trying as well! It sounds like your new baby is older (still really young, just not a baby baby) so your fight is bound to be a little more dramatic. Keep it up - you will win the war.

Have a great evening!

He still loves his seeds so I'm gonna sprinkle the top with it. And I had been wondering about spices can you use crushed red chili or pepper flakes. And what kind of spices are safe to use? And thanks picklemedickles for the last comment super encouraging. And I really am trying but only from the help from this website and another forum. If I hadn't found it my bird would still be in his cage eating seeds because this is my first bird. You guys are so awesome and know so much thanks a ton. :) its great to have the help

They love crushed red pepper!!!
Cinnamon is a safe spice also.

Thank u for such great info..my little one is so picky..I will try anything. Can I flavor the water with something or just leave it plain?? It's hot where I live and want to ensure enough water intake.

My grey likes baked chicken legs....Loves the bone.

Parrots can eat bone?? Did not know that...this could be fun to watch! Just bake it up and give it huh? I'm gonna try this. I feel my little one isn't eating or drinking enough, maybe she is,idk.

It's hot where you live because you grew up in Wisconsin. I know Florida can be hot but you are used to cold. I can be really cold in the winter and my 90 year old dad who grew up in Indiana will have light clothing on and be just fine.

So true..I'm just being over protective and over thinking everything since my Amazon passed away.

Absolutely! All my parrots love chicken wings and legs....the marrow in
chicken bones is very very good for them. And they have a blast. They don't eat the bones, they chew them up, eat the meat and marrow.

Just don't let your dogs clean up after wards.
