Ricco - Goffin's Cockatoo
I'm taking Ricco to the vet when we pick him up. It's a certified avian vet. I plan on getting all the tests done (Giardia, CBC, Chlamydia (sp?), etc.) as well as a beak and nail trim. I called and asked for an estimate, but she told me all she knew was that it would be $40 for the initial visit and $20 for the beak and nail trim. Then the tests would add to the price from there.

How much was your bird's vet visit?

Can I expect it to be around $100-$200 or more around $500-$600? I'm just trying to get a ballpark estimate here. I can afford it, I just want to be prepared and not shocked when the total is $900 or something!

Can I assume it's not going to be more than $700? :rolleyes:

When I took Sully in all they did was blood sample, fecal sample plus a shot of antibiotics and the vile of antibiotics they sent me home with and it was $270.

It really depends on the veterinarian, but before ok ing all the tests make sure that they give you a written estimate so that everything is itemized and you have a concrete number. Some vets are significantly more expensive than others for no reason that I can see. I would also recommend that you go in with a list of questions an write down each test you want run so that you don't end up missing one. Ask the vet for the pros and cons so that they are not running tests that they do not see as medically relevant.

A good vet should work around your budget at the time and also allow you to be present while they work with your parrot.

@RescueMe
It drives me crazy how some vets are so much more expensive. There is one in my area that I never took Rosie to because their parrot reviews where generally bad(such as charging large amounts and not taking credit cards).

Thanks, guys!

Wow, cdog, that seems a bit much for the little bit that they did... Hm. :/ Oh, you live in Cali... Isn't everything overpiced there? LOL. I live in little ole Indiana (sadly).

A list sounds like a great idea, RescueMe. I just know I'll forget something! Thanks for the idea :)

Are you kidding, I hate California it is too much of a city life and it is too overpopulated. I would love to live in Peoria il(my dad was born there), I love small towns in the middle of nowhere where there isn't a lot of people and you can't see into your neighbors window! Luckily I am moving to Prescott,az in a few years! It is my favorite city/place in the whole world, it is a small town in the middle of the woods.

To funny!! My husband and I are originally from Bloomington Illinois and used to go to Peoria all the time!!! We have now lived in Iowa for almost 7 yrs :)

Well most of the cost was the antibiotics which sadly I don't think are working so I am going to take Sully back in tomorrow.

Haha. When my dad was a teenager there all the cops new his name and the car/motorcycles he rode.Lol

welp coming from australia, all our samples have to be sent by overnight post to your universities and labs in america. so they are MUCH more expensive to get over here so i cant help estimate you a price. but i wouldn't just let her do all the tests if she cant give you some sort of quote first, that sounds a bit dodgy...

Yes make sure they give you the quote first, my vet did that for Sully and I was very surprised they were nice enough to do that.

Full avian work up as you mentioned was about $250 for me in Colorado. Blood, fecal, health exam. No beak or nail trim since it wasn't needed, otherwise that would have been $12 more for each.
