blue and gold macaw
When I rescued Taiyo, I noticed the flight feathers on one of his wings had been snapped off about half way. I know they weren't snipped with scissors as the cut was not clean, so my hypothesis is that since his owner had him shut in a cage with no perches, and they got snagged on the bars of his cage and broke. My concern at the moment is that his lack of flight will lead to poor exercise and imbalance issues, which is a problem as I like to have my birds flighted, especially the larger ones. I read that it takes about 12-18 months for a macaw's flight feathers to fully moult, and I'd like to know what the best course of action is. If the snapped shafts of the damaged feathers are fully removed, will they regrow faster than if I were to wait for a moult? I do not want to pull them, but I'm worried that waiting over a year for them to grow (and him having no flight experience prior to this) will hinder his development and potentially mean he will never have the confidence to fly, etc.

Is there any advice? Should I intervene or wait?

If you have it done definitely have a vet do it. Besides safety you don't want to become the villain. Parrots don't forget!

Yes. If you have the broken feather pulled it will grow back faster. Take him to the vet and have them pull it.
Thank you for the advice!! I'll definitely look for some avian vets nearby who would be able to do this
