Hi guys from uk bought my first irn about 2 weeks ago he is 8 months old lovely boy called Rico. The person who i bought him off only feed him by his eating habits sunflower seeds and apples he loves them ive given him monkey nuts and reading more about there diets i want to give him some veg also. I got him some carrots broccoli sweetcorn snap peas i boiled them for a bit, bit softer for him not much interested in them can you give me any tips as i want him to have a varied diet not just seed and apples. ive taken out the container which had seed and left him with the veg hope he gets a bit hungry and starts eating them (not cruel is it)

I was told to remove sunflower seeds and monkey nuts. We took our IRN in from someone else at 14mths old, and they weren't giving him any fresh veggies, (just pet shop food mix) however, I started off with grapes and apples, then carrots. And now have him eating everything he can get his hands on in 5 weeks.

I think the trick is to have a good 'seed' mix in the cage all night and morning and then when I come in from work at 3 he gets a bowl of veggies and I share the time with him while he eats it. Then once he's had his fill he goes back to the seed.

If you google Tidymix I now buy my stuff from their :) But there are lots of different recommended sellers.

He also has some pellets in with his mix now. Something from our local exotic shop which they raise their Grey's on. He's getting more used to a varied diet now which is good.

Try a different thing with him each day and see how he take them, you'll soon learn what he likes and doesn't.

Mine will throw all the peppers and carrots out on the floor to get the peas and sweatcorn. Then after I pick them up he'll go back and eat the others. They're crazy... lol but love him :)

Here's a way I change their diet:

I leave a bowl of pellets in their cage at all times!
Feed Fruits and veggies in the morning and during evening time I feed minimal seeds like a Table spoon full and empty it in the morning before feeding fruits and veggies again. Once you see him going after the pellets pretty good, stop seeds at night. Try not to give any nuts or seed treats for now. Let him get used to his new diet for a month or so before giving him treats again. Good Luck!

im willing to try anything for him so he gets a good healthy diet

Well, Bobby is now eating Tidy mix, and a small cupfull of his older food so he doesn't feel it's too big a change. I believe Tidy mix has sunflower seeds in, in a small quantity, everything is already hulled. So that nothing is wasted. This is really helpful in seeing what's actually in the bowl too, easy to think the bowl is still full, when it's actually full of shells.

Keep trying with all the veggies and fruit. Bobby loves anything. I put it all in a big bowl and he gets it in the morning. He flicks lots out, peppers and carrots, and anything he doesn't feel like, but when he's eaten all the goodies. (he likes peas and the sweetcorn first) he usually mops up the others.

It may take a while but I'm amazed at the difference in Bobby's feathers even in 5 weeks. From a greyish blue to stunning blue. And even though he's moulting and nippy his attitude is improving and he doesn't attack his toys as much either.

:)

Today got a parrot mix with about 25 different types in mix and see how it goes i mean dont wanna be starving the poor fella but i also cant be just feeding him apples , sunflower seeds, monkey nuts:(

Today update looked this morning has not had anything. ive tried toi to feed him by hand he takes it and throws it out

Give him some time. He will have to be a degree of hungry to try it. The cag never touched her veg yesterday either ; (

I've had my IRN for about 5 months now and she was also eating mostly seeds when I got her. She is now eating Harrison's pellets everyday with fresh fruits and veggies. Along with an avi-cake and the occasional other treat. She would not eat Harrison's for the longest time, but took to veggies and fruits pretty quick. So I would make her "salad" in the morning when she was the hungriest and sprinkle crushed up Harrison's over it. Everyday I would crush them up less and less and now shes eats them alone.
Maybe you could try something like that with apples? Try other fruits. I know my girl has always loved grapes and cherries, and took to blueberries pretty quick. It might not be the diet you're aiming for but that would be a good start. Then you can move onto things like sweet potato, peppers, squash, ect. Hope that helps.
