Has anyone free flight trained older birds? Specifically macaws. I’ve had my 25 year old macaw for four months and I would love to free flight train him I’ve done lots of research I have watched and read everything I could get my hands on. He would go outside with his old owner but couldn’t fly due to his flight feathers being damaged, improper diet, and no room to exercise his wings but now that that’s fixed he’s definitely gotten stronger. He does go outside with me to work on the farm with my family but I only take him out if it’s sunny and the wind is going below 10mph. Since he’s gotten stronger I think I’ll keep him indoors until he’s trained (if I can train him to safely fly). I’m definitely not a professional but when I’m older I hope to train parrots for a living. And my family has an indoor arena which I think would be super helpful whilst training him to fly outdoors. I tried to harness train him for a few months but he never got super comfortable with it so I stopped but I plan on starting up again. Any story’s? Tips? opinions? Nothing makes me happier than being outside with him but if you don’t think it’s possible to train him or for him to safely be outside with me I’ll keep him indoors.
