Petrie: Half Moon Conure
Hey All...I am new Feather Momma and would like some info. I have recently gotten Petrie. She is a Half Moon Conure. I was told she ate a fresh food diet. I have noticed since having her home with us. She will not eat fresh veggies. I tried lightly sauteing carrots and broccoli in coconut oil and she enjoyed that and ate the bit I gave her....Any suggestions? She has also started Roudybush California Blend is doing well. As trying to switch over from her seed diet. Tia! I appreciate any guidance as this is my first feather baby!

Try a hundred different ways of serving a hundred different fresh foods :) try sprouting her usual seed mix, try different colors, different sizes, different shapes, different times of the day, different temperatures, etc. don't give up! Ask the old owner what she seemed to like :)

The last baby I sold the new owner said she wouldn't eat fresh; well they were feeding her juicy chop. She is a cockatiel, she needs sprouts and greens. Feed her a whole leaf of kale and she will DESTROY IT. Just because it is fresh and she likes fresh doesn't mean she likes the particular thing you are serving in the particular way you are serving it.

Will do! Giving up is not an option. We are still learning eachother. Just would like her to intake more veggies. She does so well with fruit of all kinds and other treats. But the veggies she's being a little picky. Is it okay to continue serving with small amounts of coconut oil. Until I figure out another preference of hers? Ive read yes in many different places. But I still dont 100% feel like Im doing all the RIGHT things.

I saute chop in coconut oil, just enough to add a little flavor to the chop.

I make birdie smoothies (with bird safe fruits, veggies and berries). This has been my most successful method for even my STUBBORN rescues that are used to all-seed junk diets. Our birds seem to enjoy the texture and just drink, slirp, and sometimes flick their smoothies. It's adorable. I think sometimes for birds, eating fresh foods is a texture insecurity because it can be rather unusual if they aren't used to eating fresh pieces of fruit and veggies. This is a GREAT way to sneak in kale too! Also steamed sweet potato and cooked/cooled whole grain quinoa are great "transition" foods to get birds used to eating fresh stuff :)

The veggies and coconut oil sound fine.

Did the person you got your conure from define what "fresh food" was that they fed? I feed my birds a chop/mash type recipe that has grains, legumes, vegetables and some fruits in it. They tend to eat that up better than feeding a single item alone!
