Ok this is me being angry and frustrated.

As many of you know, I raise birds. I also do rescue and foster work, and try to be in a constant state of learning.

I take these things very seriously. I see the predicament so many birds are in and I do my best to take action against it. I love every bird in my aviary; ā€œbreeder,ā€ baby, foster, all of them and I do everything in my power to protect them. That includes a contract. A specific contract that, among other things, states that if the adopter doesn’t want to keep the bird, the bird comes back to me. I don’t want my babies floating around craigslist or taking up space in a rescue. I brought them into this world, I am ultimately responsible for their welfare.

I don’t trick anyone or deceive anyone. I don’t even let people meet the babies until they know this. I interview people and get to know them, and sometimes I tell them a Ringneck isn’t for them or a bird isn’t for them, or that a Ringneck might be fine but that whatever babies I have at the time aren’t what they are looking for personality wise.

Today I basically got told I was unethical for doing anything other than trading cash for birds. Unethical for trying to protect birds instead of just selling them to the highest bidder.

We guess what? I’m not going to stop. Im not in this to make a pile of dough; that ain’t happening. Im on a mission to raise the standard of parrot production in this country. I believe that companion pets should be responsibly produced in small numbers in HOMES with FAMILIES and people willing to take responsibility for their lives forever, not just until they can be traded for money. I believe parrots should be raised by people who never stop learning, never stop seeking answers. People who care about the LONG TERM health of their birds; physical, mental, emotional health. The health of the relationship between birds and humans.

So I’m going to keep doing it, even though it ruffles the feathers of people who want to continue doing the minimum amount of work and spending the minimum amount of money to turn a profit.

And you guys are the only ones I know who as a group are as passionate about your birds as I am. So thanks for hearing my rant.

And if that ruffles their feather they don’t understand having animals and shouldn’t be taking home a bird or any animal. Thank you for putting up with horrible people while trying to find true bird lovers.

This is one of those times hearing someone state 'unethical' clearly places it back on them!

One of the problems of becoming old is that when you look around you and see what passes for educated today, it leaves you truly scared. Words have meaning and we are loosing our language to these morons. Add to that, they now only want an answer, not at all interested in knowledge. Only an answer, and if it sounds at all plausible, all the better.

The Art of Breeding and those talented few (which includes you) is quickly fading away. What is replacing you is that sad money only group.

Continue to take care of your Babies! The 'ethical you' is a hero in my World! The Heart and Art you bring to Breeding is a blessing to those lucky few matches you make!

You as a producer of a "product "(parrots) are entitled to set any limits or requirements you want.
If someone doesn't like it they can take their business elsewhere.

Dani, the fool who uttered such nonsense clearly suffers from a rectal-cranial inversion!

One might argue the breeder whose only concern for money is unethical. Your practices are clearly enlightened and ought receive high praise.

Ahh forget about them. Don't stop doing what you're doing. Ignore those losers.

I think that person needs to look up the word "Ethical" in the Dictionary. Doesn't mean to do right by that person but to do what is right in the grand scheme

IMO EVERY person in the pet trade should follow the same as you. It's not a right to have a pet but a privilege

I think that person needs to strongly consider a lobotomy ASAP!

Who would say such a thing? How could it possibly be less than ethical? Was it another breeder who said that, or someone looking for a bird? What's wrong with people? Don't answer that, it would take all day. It makes me shake my head, as so many current events do.

It was another breeder. The consensus seems to be that it’s unethical to not allow them to sell the bird on and get their money back, as if I’m tricking them
Somehow.

Well that 'splains it! A breeder who fears you are raising the bar of excellence. :(

exactly as Scott said. Your work makes breeders annoyed cause they can't just throw a baby bird at someone shouting "excellent pet" you make people realize there are responsibilities and work involved with a pet (weird right?)

You better believe we've got your back.
Rant any time you need to rant, friend.

If you've got it in plain text and explain the policy clearly, what's to argue over?

The term unethical is grossly misused in this situation - what you're doing is the very opposite.

Make sure everyone who obtains a bird through your services understands - beforehand - that you retain the right to follow-up to ensure the creatures' wellness is maintained to certain x definable standards within y period of time after adoption, as an ethical and sound business practice enforceable by contract stipulation. And that should include a clause that precludes the immediate or short-term resale of a living creature intended as a companion.

There would be no way to stop a determined person from this anyway, but if they know beforehand that you vigilantly monitor all mediums of trade, and the bird is appropriately ID'd, and you simply don't deal with people who seem untrustworthy, or purely profit-motivated, it would hopefully deter them from engaging with you for that purpose.
