gas heater in apartment

Hey all!

So it's starting to get colder here in LA (yes! it does get cold here, especially at night!) and in the next few weeks I'll have to turn my heater on. My apartments uses a gas heater.

My question is: is this kind of heating safe for my Meyers parrot? I haven't had to use the heat since I got her, and I'm a bit concerned that the gas could be harmful.

I'd take her out of the apartment when I first turn it on (as it does tend to smell a bit for the first few hours). But when the smell goes away would that kind of heating be safe?

What type of gas heater is it? At my house we have two furnaces, one in the garage for downstairs and one upstairs in a furnace closet. Both use gas. The important thing for the furnace is to also have carbon monoxide alarms. We have never had a problem(lived here 9 years), but that stuff is deadly. It's a silent orderless killer! It's vital to have alarms to warn you of any leaks.

When the heater is first turned on here it smells a little weird as well. My parents never tell me when they turn it on, so I wake up in the morning to the smell. It's never caused Rosie any problems. This year I stressed to my parents to tell me when they turn it on, and I'm going to put a wet moist cloth over the vent to catch any collected dust being blown out.

My house currently uses natural gas, but the previous house I lived in used propane. Never had any issues with either.
