As you will guess I'm new here, after 40 years I am again the proud owner of a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo who I have just rescued, she (being presumptive) is under 6 months old I reckon as I can still see grey and dark in her plummage. I live in Queensland Australia.

What fun! Please do share some pictures, and tell us how you came to bring her into your home.

Welcome to the asylum with all the other bird slaves.....

Good luck with your new feathered friend.....

Thanks for the welcome guys.
My brother knows the fool who owned her, he bought her on a whim about a month ago and regrets it now, my brother knew that I kept parrots as a kid (& I mean I kept them not my parents) & have been talking about getting another bird for a year or so but haven't found the right one and he gave me a call yesterday morning and showed me her on skype and I was hooked.

I haven't picked her up yet as I got the owner to take her straight to a local AV that my brother knows & trusts for an annual check expecting to pick her up today from the vet, but unfortunately we are expecting storms with up to 500mm, yes 500mm (approx 20 inches) of rain tomorrow so I needed to get everything ready for the deluge and to stay with the house and dogs incase we get flash flooding which is a distinct probability. My brother is now going to pick her up tomorrow keeping her covered and on Monday morning once the danger period is over I am driving the 6 hours west to get her. Once I have her I will put some pics up.

6 hours west!! Where does he live, the border of QLD & NT? LOL :D

I get the feeling its pretty common for people to buy "cockies" on a whim... they are cute, they are cheap and everyone has a fond memory of a cocky as a child. Reality swiftly hits them. Thank goodness this person at least had the good sense to realise he was in over his head early on, a lot of birds suffer in a small barren cage, alone, their whole life :(
Can't wait to see photos of your new little munchkin :D

@Thingamagigs
Out towards Mitchell way, I wont say where exactly as it is only a small community & as he did the right thing I dont want on the off chance to risk getting him into any bother. I see your in Brissy bet you can't wait for the weather tomorrow arvo?

I hope you are safe from that storm and congrats on your new birdy baby. looking forward to the pics and welcome to the forum:)

:D we are enjoying the storm right now Lee! lol I wish I had seen your post last night, it might have made me think to check the possible severity. My partners brother is down from Mackay and it looks like his flight going back today might be cancelled!
I'm on the sunny coast, about an hour north of brissy. My yard is slowly flooding, numerous things that were in my yard are no longer in my yard and some things that weren't in my yard before are now happily flapping against the walls of the house LOL
My bird netting seems to be ruined :( That will teach me for not taking the weather seriously and not thinking to take down the net.

Interestingly the Corellas didnt seem to take the weather seriously either and I heard them out flying this morning!! Must be hungry to go out in this weather.

I reckon your brother might be lucky to fly back tomorrow arvo, they reckon tomorrow morning is going to be just as bad as today. I'm in Ipswich just west of Brissy. Not too bad at the mo lots of rain and a bit windy, but I have creeks both sides of me so might get interesting later tonight/tomorrow with the flash flooding. So long as we don't get the tornadoes like up north should be fine. Good luck hope you don't get hit too hard.

I just realised the storm hasnt hit yet! :o
This is just pre-storm weather, its due to hit us in a couple more hours. A few tornadoes hit in central QLD and have devastated some small towns. The weather is steadily getting worse, the wind and rain has just picked up further. The creek across the road is nearly full and is higher than I have ever seen, so I am keeping my eye on it and have Mana's evac cage ready to go in case. My daughter is at her Dads place which is on high ground thankfully.

You stay safe out there at Ippy as well... we are across the road from a creek in a flood prone area (caboolture, cheap rent brand new houses) so we are prepared to leave if needed (and have appropriate contents insurance). I'm not expecting to be hit too hard storm wise but the rising water is concerning, I may have insurance but who wants to lose their stuff. You are more likely to get tornadoes out there at ipswich I'm afraid :( Being surrounded by creeks I hope you have a highset QLDer, good luck :)

"You are more likely to get tornadoes out there at ipswich I'm afraid" Thanks for those words of comfort :)
Like you I'm more concerned with the creeks but she'll be right, more than likely might be cut off for a day or 2. Some horrific stuff up north. Be safe.

Welcome to the forum! Hope you are BOTH safe and dry! <3

My best friend spent many years as a pastry chef in a prominent hotel in Townsville. She still gets back there once a year on vaca to catch up with all her friends...

Just went down the road to check the bridge and its just gone under they reckon another 15hrs before the water reaches its full height. Well thats me going nowhere for a couple of days now. Not a happy camper. :(

Ah that sucks :( My sister is out at ipswich and is fine but surrounded by flooding. There have been a lot of road closures. I hope you have stocked up on food :/
We haven't. Oops. LOL

I doubt very much the water will come too close to the house to worry about thankfully I'm in Leichardt so used to getting shut in by the water, got enough food for a couple of days so all good on that front. Hoping your safe & dont get too hungry. How the water near you?

the creek went down! It was completely full and on the verge of bursting its banks but has dropped 4foot since this morning. We have a flood warning for our area at 10:30am, so in about an hour... but I dont see it flooding :) So we are fine by the looks of it.

We were in Mackay for cyclone Yasi and lost power for over a week. All our food was destroyed and there was nothing left in any of the shops in mackay. Now that was an interesting week LOL
