Puck has brought it to my attention that we need better lighting inside. I don't like the blinds to be open because I live on the bottom floor, and people walk by my windows all the time, so I'm uncomfortable leaving them open. Consequently, it's not too bright in my apartment. Puck started playing with the blinds the other day, and wouldn't stop, and he got SO EXCITED AND SILLY when I opened them for him!

This made me realize how badly I do need better lighting. I just switched to full spectrum light bulbs, which I like better, but I need some brighter fixtures or something. I do have depression, so this will be good for me to.

Any suggestions of what kind of lamps/bulbs to buy?

There is a special neon light 8000 K for deprecion etc. for the perrot it is OK with 6500 K daylight neon. Keep a distance of max 45 cm above the cage.

Ooh, interesting! I'll check it out! Thanks!

My mom used to have some sort of bright light for depression, but she can't find it. I wonder if it's the same thing.

An avian veterinarian told me to be sure to use a light made for birds, as those for people and/or plants may be too bright for the bird's eyes and cause problems. We have the FeatherBrite lights, and those are really wonderful. Well-made and easy to use.

Thanks for the advice!

Featherbrite looks like a good product but it's very expensive for what it is! Don't you think I could get a regular lamp (not on the cage obviously) and put a light bulb with the same brightness (full spectrum of course), and have it be fine? What's different about the $15-20 avian light bulb?

Oooh, thank you! I'd definitely prefer the UV light. For some reason I thought the regular full spectrum had it. I need it too, because I don't spend very much time outside in actual sunlight. LOL

So reptile lighting would work too? I was wondering about that. I'm seeing different intensities for the UV lights. At the pet store I saw 2.0 and 10.0, and the site you sent me is selling 5.0. Fascinating!

there was something about reptile lighting being bad for our birds eyes?? think i read that here on one of the posts

Well if they're selling 5.0 for birds, and I saw a choice between the 2.0 and the 10.0, I'm guessing the 10.0 could be too strong to have nearby. It was marketed as 'desert lighting". I'm sure we have to be careful of our eyes too. It's funny, most of what's good for Puck is also good for me. :)

lol i can see you both googles in the *tannin booth :)

LOL! That would be silly. I sure could use some UV light. I'm about as white as they come. LOL
