So, Merlin has been throwing up today, not regurgitating, but throwing up. He was also behaving quite 'odd'... just something wasn't right about him. So I took him to the local non avian vet (just around the corner) after having a breakdown on the phone to the receptionist. I took him there just incase there was something so blindingly obvious wrong with him that they could fix. They said they couldn't see anything unusual, but wanted to refer me to an exotics spe******t. I declined and said I'd rather be referred to an Avian spe******t in Knutsford (for all those in the UK ;)).

£40 taxi fare round trip and a very expensive and tearful day and we're home with Merlin who's on some antibiotics and is on noodles and water until tomorrow. (Easy on his digestive system).

120g, good 'fat' reserves, good feathering, nice and bright, chatty and playful. etc. with just a good 'nippy' attitude when needed.

Vet was very happy with him overall and just suspected that he had some crop irritation causing him to vomit. However he has put him on antibiotics for the next 5 days and I'm to ring the vet tomorrow and let him know how Merlin's doing. He hasn't thrown up since however, so all is looking well :)

He has had his claws trimmed (yey for me, nay for Merlin as he's not struggling to stick to things :P) and I got to meet their Senegal 'Frankie', who is beautiful, she has such fantastic feathers and she's a real sneaky witch - leaning for head scritches but oh I knew better than to fall for it! (I saw the vets war wounds!).

It's been a good but traumatic day - but one of those days that remind me just how much I love my baby and how I'd do anything to make sure he was okay. Some days I get very annoyed with Merlin's behaviour or screaming etc, especially when I'm having a very bad day with my illness "why did I get him?", but then he just does something so redeeming like give me a cuddle and all of the bad stuff just melts away. He's been so brilliant with his behaviour since moving house last Saturday, I can't help but think that he likes this place too.

So yeah, good day, bad day, Merlin's fine, my purse however is not, he's sat in his cage eating noodles like a good boy after taking his medicine like a trooper.

Hi Mayden,
Wow , you and Merlin had a terrible day today !
I'm glad Merlin is on the mend. Unfortunately your purse will take longer to recover. I was wondering what kind of noodles did the vet prescribe ? I'm just curious and would like to know .

Thanks :white1:

I know how stressful and frightening these things are; been there a lot lately!

I'm glad Merlin seems to be doing well, and you and Merlin will be in my thoughts.

Found out apparently more money has gone missing from my account that is... unaccounted for, ho hum, just my luck. >.<

luvmytoo, merlin was just on normal pasta noodles. They're super easy for him to digest apparently, I presume because they're not acidic or anything, just... boring plain food thats still good for him. I was told to feed him a little bit every three hours so he wasn't overwhelming himself with food.

He hasn't thrown up since before rushing him to the vets anyway, so I'm taking that as a good sign and he's been back to his normal self. :) He's so good with a syringe too, so glad I've kept reminding him that yummy things come out of a syringe ^^.

I feel for you roxyn, it's tough! Hope we both don't have to do it all to often now the worst scares are over ;)

Yes, bread, pasta and rice are some of the easiest things for us and most animals to digest. Trust me, I eat a lot of those things!

Often boiled hamburger and rice will help a dog that is vomiting. I don't recommend hamburger for a bird though because it can contain trace amounts of E.Coli that are enough to kill a bird who weighs so little. Even a large macaw is about 1/3 the weight of a typical newborn human baby.

The vet also suggested bread, but we were making spaghetti bolognese that night anyway, so thought we could just cook some more and he could have his own dish of noodles. ^^

Just makes me think of how I always crave toast/pasta when I'm feeling sick, I think it's just instinct and you know it's good for you, haha.

Just rang the vet again now and paid for everything over the phone since he broke the card reader last night :P Told him how Merlin was doing and he sounded happy enough.

If anyone is in the UK and interested in this vet, here's the website.

Will post it under the 'vets near you' thread too. Cannot recommend them enough, the appointment time is quite long too as they do a fullll check up each time so nothing is missed. & it's right next to a falconry which I shall be checking out sometime at a later date! :D
