Hello everyone! I am new(ish) to parronthood and to parrotforums. I am a 25 year old grad student at University of Alaska Fairbanks studying volcanology. I just adopted a new fid four days ago from a family that was moving to Florida (much better place for a parrot than Alaska), but couldn't keep her. She's a green cheek, her name is Mochi, and she is approximately 2 years old. I say 'she' but don't know for sure. Her first avian vet appointment is next Thursday and, among other things, we will DNA sex her to confirm or deny. I raised cockatiels for several years when I was younger, and I lived with roommates for a couple years that had 2 green cheeks, a ring neck, and an African grey so I'm decently familiar with birbs. That being said there is a TON I do not know, so I'm looking forward to learning form all of y'all so I can give my sweet little baby a great life. Outside of being into birds, I LOVE volcanoes and geology!! I'm always down to talk science and nerd out about cool rocks! I hope I'm able to contribute something to the community, and I look forward to chatting with everyone. :)

Welcome to you both :). You sound like our kind of people!

Welcome aboard, fellow Alaskan. Good luck trying to simulate a parrot’s natural habitat in this state. If you figure out any tricks, let me know.

I have a female, cinnamon green cheek (dna tested), about 3 years old. So, similar boat. If you no longer live on the Banks, and you reside in Anchorage or the valley, I can recommend an avian vet that we have been satisfied with. That’s Ravenwood Vet Clinic in Eagle River. Pick some brains and welcome to the flock, although I forewarn you I won’t be joining in on any academic discussion about rocks. Just not my forte.

Welcome and be welcomed.

Welcome! I've had birds and worked with them for over 20 years, and I'm still learning. I recently went back and read the blue sticky threads at the top of general parrot info. If you want to nerd out on parrots check out my ornithology thread ;)

Welcome to you and Mochi, thanks for joining our family!

Very impressed you were able to source an avian vet in Fairbanks!!

Visited your city several times for business during the early 1990s. Only once was I able to wander outdoors dressed comfortably to view the beauty. First time seeing three-pronged plugs attached to the front grill of vehicles. Yikes!!

Welcome! I spent 7 years living in Delta Junction and miss it terribly (yes, even at this time of year)! Congratulations on your new feather baby :)

What a small world! I'm also in Fairbanks and work at the clinic you'll be bringing your bird into! I really like out vet so you'll be in good hands. Best of luck to both of you!

Welcome.

We love nerds of all varieties here. Geology is one of my favorite nerd-burgers, in fact. You're fitting in already!

I'm glad you found us.
