Hamster cage carrier

I am going to be bringing home my GCC soon and am looking at using my old hamster cage (Hasn't been used for 8+ years) to transport him home. Its 12'' x 15'' x 15''. There is a little bit of rust in the corners but nothing to noticeable. The main problem I got is the paint safe? Its a hamster cage so shouldn't it be safe?

Honestly my GCC came home in a shoebox with holes poked... Shredded newspaper and a millet spray. Duct taped so it couldn't come open.
But I usually use a cat carrier for the larger birds.
