Ive been wanting to get a good and safe harness for my amazon but this is my first time getting a harness for a bird so i want some recommendations from people who likely have more experience. He’s an adult and around 20 years old.

I've used Aviator brand for a very long time, almost since company started. Aviator is advertised as a fligh harness. I haven't used it that way. It's sturdily made and as close to one piece as possible. With supervision it's very beak resistant. My current one several years old. The previous one was left near cage and demoted to back up. Before considering a harness, your bird needs to be used to having nearly entire body handled; wings, legs, head. Aviator has a video that helps. The leash is stretchy. I am paranoid about fly away. Prevention is my motto. So I advocate harness. Yes, it's expensive but current one is nearing 7 yrs of use. They have a variety of colors and sizes. I have a retractable leash attached. It has an old puppy collar on it. I hook collar to my wrist or travel carrier as extra security. My CAG will demand to go 'bye' I am expected to put harness on and take her outside. She goes to pet stores, vet, trips etc. She wears it in her travel carrier. We used to go on walks. But she mimics red-tailed hawks so well we were getting dive bombed. Check out Aviator sire and videos

Thank you for the recommendation! I really appreciate it ❤️

I think the hard part is going to be getting a 20 year old Amazon to let you put it on him without both of you needing stiff drinks (and bandaids for you) before and after!

I commend you for making the effort to ensure your parrot is safe and secure when outdoors uncaged. We read way too many very sad stories of parrots that had their wings trimmed getting spooked and flying off in a gust of wind never to be seen again. Less than two weeks ago a member's eclectus (wings trimmed) they had for over 25 years got lost while they were hiking together in Arizona. The heartbreak is unimaginable. It's not something one gets over.

Same experience with my Amazon as

rheashard2

It took me almost a year of every night training with my little amazon Salty, until he was totally OK with putting it on. We still practice putting it on and off almost nightly. Well worth it though, as he's had some scares when we were outside and if not harnessed, he would have flown away.
