Fancy Green Cheek Conure named, Kiwi.
Hi guys,

I have an 11 month old Green Cheek Conure named Kiwi. I have been doing some research on the African Grey Parrots and I have really taken a liking to them. I am considering getting one. Before I even think about it, I am curious to know if it's okay to have a Green Cheek and African Grey living together in the same house. Let me specify that I would make sure both parrots are in their separate cages. I would not think of housing them together in the same cage. I'm just wondering would it be hard on Kiwi by introducing a new parrot to the house? Kiwi is well bonded to myself and my fionce. I'm curious if there will be any jealousy issues as well. If anyone has had an experience like this do tell, I would love to hear about it.

Thank-you :)

Hi there Newfie, and welcome to the forum. :)

I'm sure Kiwi would adjust to you adding an African Grey to the family. Just make sure and divide your attention equally, and all "should" be well. :)

Its okay if they dislike each other, just dont let them out at the same time. If things happen to get extreme you could always house them in different rooms. However do not forget if you do bring a new bird home always remember the 30 day quarantine far away from your GCC and get a vet appointment booked for the new bird asap. And as mentioned above as long as you have time for both birds.

Thank you for the replies, it really helped. I am heading to my local pet store today to see if they have any African Greys available for adoption. I have lots of time to give to kiwi and a new addition.
Cheers :)

You should really look into a reputable breeder, it is a much better way to buy a parrot and it is also cheaper.

But never buy from a pet store. Even if the pet store seems good, buying from them only supports that pet stores should carry parrots, which they should not! Buying straight from a breeder is the best, or adopting a older parrot from a rescue.

There are many good, and many bad breeders. I bet many parronts can recommend breeders for CAGS and TAG. One good breeder that breeds both congo's and Tenmeh's is mirror lake exotics in Florida. And they can safety ship your weaned baby to you.

Id be very cautious about getting a grey. Why do you want another bird? Ive heard that another bird with a conure can mean that they bond with each other and dont really need or want their human flock mates. Also you would need to double the amount of time you spend with the two. If your conure is as bonded to you as Peanut is to me then s/he may not take kindly to the other bird and could attack you or the other bird if you give it attention.

We have a Birman cat called Harry who was with us before Peanut arrived and they generally are fine together though Id never leave either alone together. If Im cuddling up with the cat and Peanut sees he comes and attacks me so poor cat has to have his cuddles elsewhere!!
