This afternoon, our Barney flew away.
We drove all around the neighborhood looking for him with hearts hammering and legs turned to jelly, but no luck! Sadly, we returned home to find Matthew wildly pointing into the tree directly outside our back gate. There was Barn, chomping away on the gum blossoms and looking down at us from about fifteen feet away.
We brought out the peanuts, his favourite dried pawpaw jar with the red lid, his black treat cup and the honey jar with the yellow lid. Barn looked interestedly at them all, but continued to chomp away on the gum blossoms and do his own thing. After about an hour of acute anxiety and traffic noise and a bloody Peregrine Falcon flying overhead (yes, really!!!), Barney swooped low over our heads and flew off toward the Scout Hall on the corner. Chasing him, we saw him turn about and fly back toward home, over our roof and out along the Minmi Road. Despite driving around and around, we know he's either gone out into the swamp (where the eagles and falcons live) or is holed up somewhere in a tall tree.
He's so green, it's almost impossible to spot him among leaves, even when you know where he is. I'm afraid he won't be coming back to us and Madgie is alone tonight for the first time in her life.
The kids and I are making fliers to spread around and we've already posted on the animal rescue sites. Please pray that someone might find Barney, whether they return him or not. He's such a beautiful, clever, funny boy. Our hearts are breaking...
