Hello bird lovers.. my name is Shy, I am 29 years old and after 2 years of research i am taking the plunge and looking to purchase a parrot. I have had a longing for one since my cockatoo died 3 years ago. I am now trying to decide between a blue throat macaw and a yellow naped amazon... I am 50/50 right now and i am taking my time to make a decision on what is best for the bird and my family.. If you guys have any advice or any questions plz let me know.. until then i will keep spying in on threads:p

I am new to the baby bird scene w/ a 6 wk old B&G. The pet store where we got ours also has a blue fronted amazon just being weaned and it the sweetest thing the way she coos and whimpers and loves to be held. The BT i have heard is very nice as well. More time to study, I believe the BT can be a more than one person bird. Good luck and God speed :)

I am leaning towards a macaw because after all the research i have heard the amazon is more of a one person bird and thats not the best for us considering this bird will be a pet for me and my husband.

Welcome to the forum, good luck deciding, either way you go I'm sure you will have a beautiful life long companion.

i had a umbrella cockatoo.. my family got her when i was 8 and we knew nothing about large birds.. i loved that bird chocho with all my heart.. i took her when i moved out when i got married and she was there when i had my son and daughter when she died it hurt.. i dont think i can have another too just because i loved her so much

The reason I asked was that I had a feeling that it may have been an umbrella 'too. They can be difficult and complicated, also rewarding,,in a masochistic, way. I have come to love my cockatoos. We also have a female goffins, my husband cannot believe how similar they are, personality wise.

Don't blame you for wanting to try something different. I, personally, am afraid. What if I like a new species more??!!!

Welcome! I am new here as well, about to get a bird. We're most likely going to get a medium sized bird though.

Where in CA are you? :-)

Personally, I like macaws, and if I got a large parrot, I think it would be one of those.

i am in oakland ca about 20 min from sf.. I loved my too but i just cant go that route again... to close to home in my heart

pookamama what types of birds are you looking at

Ooh, you're far from me. I'm in Ventura. :-)

Blue throats are awesome, but beware, they can open about any cage door and even some padlocks(like the padlocks where you have to match the numbers up)

Wow you're really close to me, I'm in San Jose. The funny thing is I've only ever been to the Oakland airport but I'm afraid to go anywhere else because I don't know the neighborhoods or my way around haha.
Do you know about the local parrot rescue mickaboo? they always have a lot of birds up for adoption and they teach you a lot about birds before you can adopt :)
