Hello all!
My name is Kyah and I come from Melbourne, Australia.
I do not currently have a parrot, but am looking to add one to my menagerie. Our household currently holds a dog, two cats, two ferrets and many rats.

So - two questions!
1) Can I successfully keep cats and a bird, how do you do it? Of the two, one is a ragdoll - so not very acute with cat instincts, and should be fine. The other is a tonkinese, but she does spend most time in my room, so I am thinking I would be able to shut her in there during bird time. Do cats often pester birds in their cages? I could keep the cage in a separate room that the cats can't access if so (and have a play area in the lounge room)

2) What is your advice for a novice wanting an eclectus? Am I biting off more then I can chew? I have been researching parrot species for the past month or so - and they are definitely the stand out that has won me over, seeming to have all the attributes I'm looking for in a bird.
If eclectus is a no no - which species would make a good pet? Do you have any good species information sites? (I can't find many that state the negatives, I have heard of most of those from chatting to bird owners)

Any other advice for a newbie would be great too! Thanks - I look forward to hearing your wisdom!

I don't see why an Eclectus wouldn't be a good fit. But Birds and cats usually don't go together so as long as you keep the separated you should be fine. Also when it comes to a home with cats and dogs, I would get a bigger bird because they can usually ward off cats and even dogs. I have seen Macaws pick fights with large dogs and chase them around the house:)

Hi Amanda. :)

How do you keep the ferrets? They are very clever and naughty. I know they can open a cage door. I try hard not to be a negative person but I personally would not purchase a bird if I kept ferrets. There are some heartbreaking stories about ferrets opening cages and killing parrots.

The ferrets are kept in the garage in a chicken coop - even if they break out of the cage they can't break out of the garage. They only come inside for supervised playtime in a few rooms - ferrets wouldn't be a problem :)
