I just wanted to stop in and say "hello". I'm a new member and I'm looking forward to learning from many of you. I'm 27 years old and have been around animals my entire life. I grew up on a horse farm and have owned everything from fish, horses, reptiles, small mammals such as a ferret, amphibians, etc. Needless to say, I love animals! I'm currently looking at possibly getting an African Grey and have posted a thread in the African Grey forum. Your opinions are much appreciated!

Hello Nature Boy,
Welcome. Sounds like you should have a good knowledge base about animals.

Bringing a bird into your life, family, home is a HUGE commitment. It is a commitment for life with this companion bird that will require as much of your attention as though you just adopted a 3 to 5 year old child that will never grow up and rely on you to care for him/her in exactly the same manner for, literally, the rest of YOUR life. If you bring home a youngster that would live upwards of 60 years, then itis a lifetime for you -- the joys will be endless, but the work could be tireless. These birdies are babies their whole lives and we must commit to be 100% responsible to keep them entertained, happy and healthy for OUR entire lives. They should never be thought of as "I'll just sell him if I can't take care of him anymore." or "I'll give her away if I move."

Okay.... so now that I've gone ahead and lectured a little (sorry, I feel it is worthwhile and necessary)... let me say that you should find this site a great place to learn and ask questions before and during your time with a bird. You'll find many people here like me (probably all of them) that are very protective about the companion birds of this world, not just our own.

Thank you very much for the reply. No, I didn't think you were lecturing at all. In fact, responses like that are exactly what I want to hear. Being blunt and direct is the only way to be when it comes to animals. After all, they are entirely dependent on us for their survival and all too often animals are bought on impulse and aren't given proper homes. I'm the type of person that researches everything to the point of obsession before I make a purchase and I've found that usually I make the correct call. The reason I'm here is to learn from actual bird owners such as yourself, since if you want to know something you need to go to the source. Thanks for your reply and I look forward to hearing more!

Good thing you mentioned you were in your 20s.....I was going to ask if were Tic Flair, but I'm pretty sure he's in his 60s.....welcome to the forum

Haha, I wasn't even thinking about the Rick Flair "NatureBoy" reference when I made my screen name. I'm not even a wrestling fan, but that made me chuckle. On a side note, can anyone explain how to post a picture off of my hard-drive on here, or do I have to upload it to an image hosting site first?

hello.gif
and welcome to the forum:)

I don't know if size matters, but the few pics I have posted, I just drug them into into the reply or quick reply box & dropped them.....

Welcome to the forum. I was hoping for Rick Flair also, but i think he's older than 60, heck maybe in his seventies.

Thanks everyone for the kind replies! Although, I feel as though I've let many of you down by not, in fact, being Rick Flair. No "Wooooooo!" coming from this guy haha.
