First of all, thank you ahead of time for taking the time to read this post as Im sure it'll be a little lengthy...
I just posted my introduction, now I would like to post my question/concern about my new parrot.
My husband and I have wanted to add another parrot for a year and have researched and read unlimited amount of things on various species. However, when I met with the breeder to choose my new parrot (was going to be a macaw) I fell in love with the indian ringneck parrot. I loved the looks and what she told me about their dispositions. She did tell me they could be a challenge at times which is fine with me. I have gone through it all with my amazon. She was a rescue who was cage bound and abused and I turned her around over the last 3 years and she is very social, vocal and loving now.
Anyway, 2 days ago we came home with a baby ringneck. He/She is 8 months old and was said to be handfed (she did provide pictures of his progress from hatch date). Today makes his 3rd day with us if you count the night we brought him/her home. So far I do not like the cage she provided us with. She said it would do a month or so but personally I believe it is way to small. 19x19x28 and his tail feathers graze the sides when he moves around. Owning an amazon the one thing I learned above all else is cage size matters... therefore I really need advise about a cage size for my IRN.
The first 24 hrs with him here, he was completely left alone in the room we were in. I didn't try to touch him and I tried to let him calm/adjust. Day 2 I woke up and fed the amazon then fed him and noticed he takes food from me very well. Even the smallest of seed he will take from my fingers without biting me. However, anytime my hands would move around the cage, his eyes would pin and he would "fake" bite me. I have read about the IRN "bluffing" so I assume this is what I am dealing with. Today, is much better he is not pinning eyes as much, he already associates me with food and looks toward my hands to see what I have for him as I approach his cage. He is whistling to my amazon and making chuckling sounds to me as I speak to him. I did open his cage and rearrange perches and things (they were over his food) and he did fine, didn't try to bite me or anything. He is still very scared and the breeder claimed she hasn't got him to accept the hands instead he wants the arm or shoulder.
Now that I've shared what little I know about him so far, does anyone have any experience with IRN that can offer me training advise? I am trying to keep a journal of my progress with him like I did my amazon so that I can document what I was doing at anytime i may be bit. Im sure the bite isn't as bad as my amazon but all bird bites hurt so I dread it.
