Hi Rumi, I am relatively new as well, and also a Canadian! - Montreal, Quebec.
I am a very happy owner of a caique. When choosing your bird, do a lot of research!!!
Figure out how much time you have to spend interacting with your bird - some species require a lot more attention (hours a day) than others.
Decide how much room you have for your parrot's cage - the larger the parrot, obviously the larger the cage. And which ever species you decide on - remember: the bigger the better, providing the bar spacing is suitable.
If you have your heart set on a bird that will talk, consider this: even species that are known the have good vocal skills, may not end up talking. So you have to love the bird for him/herself - not for its' speech ability.
How noise tolerant are you - species such as sun conures, although beautifully coloured and not that large can be excessively loud.
The only think that I can advise is that you really do your homework, make sure that you are willing to commit the time necessary to keep a companion parrot, and get a hand-fed bird from a good breeder.
Good luck!
