Ekkie Boy "Greenbean"
Hi all,
I have a male Ekkie, "Greenbean" from a breeder, since a babe & now 6 yrs old. We love him to pieces and he's VERY handsome and sweet.
I happened to meet a female Red Bellied Poicephalus the other day and since have had abit of OCD that I want either her, (or) another species I love, a Bronze Wing Pionus, and yet to find a reputable breeder.
Can anyone out there offer any feedback re these 2 species?
I live in Northeast Iowa, and not having any leads regarding the Bronze Wing Pionus.
Thanks a bunch.

I know someone with a Bronze winged Pionus, they are one of the most stunning parrots you will ever see! Great personality's and relatively quite.

The downside of the Pionus is that they are the prone to aspergillus. Most Pionus parronts I've met and talked to have told me they do not do well in captivity health-wise compared to other parrots.

Thank you so so much Copper...I recall that I'd read somewhere that there lifespan was "unknown" in captivity...and I did wonder why at the time. I'll read up on the disease you educated me on with the pionus. So sad. I'd be absolutley heart sick if that happened.
I have only ever owned a Cockatiel when younger, and now many yrs later...our beloved Ekkie.
Do you have any suggestions another species that may be somewhat compatible with our 6-7 yr old Ekkie...(other than a female Ekkie!?!) Really don't want to have little feathered babies! NOT a breeder...just a lover!
Would the Red Bellied Poicephalus be advisable or not in your opinion?
I've also wondered...Is it best to get SAME sex or OPPOSITE...of any species?
As I mentioned, I'm abit of an amateur and not expertise in the aviary world...yet our "Greenbean" Ekkie boy is awesome, healthy and easy.
Also thankful we have an Aviary Vet close by...only had to trim his nails so far, so good..thank the Lord!
Thank you ever so much for any and all ideas you may offer Copper.

I say just get the species of bird you want. If they end up being friends that's great, and if not you'll still have two wonderful birds. I have a Galah and a Congo African grey, I never allow them to have physical contact or get on one another's cages for safety reasons but they live in the same room happily with no problems.

You always want to get a bird for yourself, rather than your existing bird. We can have alternate motives of course. When I adopted Kenji I was motivated by the fact that I hate leaving Rosie home alone. I never expected them to be friends though, and I never forgot that it can only take one second for Kenji to harm Rosie irreversibly. Even the most hypothetically compatible birds may hate each other, so just go with whatever species captures your heart. If they end up being friends great, and if they don't they don't :)

I know very little about Red Bellied Poicephalus, all I know off the top of my head is that they are very playful, spunky, and from Africa haha.

Thank you for you kind and honest reply Copper. Your communication does my heart good. I'm kind of new at how many species there truly are!!! I've never seen a Galah! She(?) is GORGEOUS! I don't have much luck finding breeders around this area, regardless of the species. There used to be bird fairs in Des Moines, IA, which atleast introduced me to the variety of beauty available...now believe it's slowed down...so I've been looking online and want someone reputable above all.
I hate to think of ever shipping a bird, yet have heard that it's safe...it still worries me for their sake.
If you know of a couple of good breeders, regardless of species, can you please share their info...if online, I can look some.
Thank you so very much Copper. I greatly appreciate your responses.

I have a female red bellied parrot named Tiki. she was mo when I got her and I have had her for a year. She is the sweetest parrot that I have ever met. She is very laid back, affectionate, not at all noisy, loves to be with you or on you, gives great kisses and has become my favorite parrot. She can entertain herself with her toys and I would highly recommend this type of parrot.:)

Sorry I lost a five somewhere. She was 5 mo when I got her so she is one and a half years old at the moment:o:D
