My bird has multiple cages. We have one in the living room, one in the bedroom, and one for our camper. I am going to add a 4th for outside time. When birds transfer into new cages, it takes time for them to feel comfortable. When I introduce a new cage, I put my bird on top of it and allow my bird to enter on her own. I don't clutter new cages with too many extras to begin with. I put in perches and food bowls and I fill the bowls with my bird's favorite foods, leaving the old or familiar cage with nothing but pellets. My bird then visits the new cage for an hour or two a couple of times a day. She decides how to enter it. This has worked very, very well for us.
Once she is comfortable, I gradually add the toys. Now, she flies from cage to cage when we move about the house.
I am sorry to hear about your loss. I sometimes feel like I can't catch my breath when I think or dream about my dogs of the past. Time helps, but we carry them with us forever.
