Sunny-Blue Fronted Amazon
Hello Everyone!

I just wanted to say what a help this forum has been for the last few months.

About 5 months ago I took in a Blue Fronted Amazon from an older woman who didn't want to take care of her anymore. I've never had a bird before so I started googling everything I could about parrots and found this site. Based on what I've read here I've gotten her on a better diet and completely redone her cage, taking out the wooden dowels and replacing with rope and other soft perches. The vet says her feet are doing much better!

Sunny is somewhere in her 40's according to the vet and she cannot fly. She was badly abused by her first owner (not the woman I got her from) and her wings did not heal right. They have almost completely atrophied.

Despite this she is sweet bird and likes nothing more then to sit on my shoulder and tell me what a good girl she is. :green: I am having an issue getting her to sit any where other then my shoulder or the top of her cage. Do you have any advise on how to introduce her to a free standing or table top perch?

I am also switching over my cookware to stainless steel and cast iron but am having trouble finding an electric table top griddle that is not non-stick. Does anyone have an example of a bird safe one?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as the months go on. Thanks for your help!

All can say is...

I LOVE YOU!

Glad Sunny found YOU, and glad YOU found us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello and welcome! Congratulations on all the changes you have made in Sunny's life, it sounds like she hit the lottery in finding you:)
I am so glad you joined us, and look forward to hearing more about Sunny!
I don't know of any table top griddles that are non-stick, but hopefully someone else will chime in:)

A warm welcome to you and Sunnybird! You're wonderful for giving Sunny a new home! I'm glad her new perches are helping her feet, amazing the difference the right perches can make. I'm looking forward to hearing more about your lovely girl.

I've found a new play stand is more appealing with treat cups or favorite toys attached. It can take time though, you can park the stand beside the cage and let Sunny decide when she's brave enough to try it out.

I can't help with the table top griddle, most small appliances have non stick coating, if you do purchase one you could contact the manufacturer for more information.

Looking forward to Sunny updates. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

Congratulations! She sounds wonderful. Table top griddle, you mean like a panini press or George Forman grill? I found pans that have a ceramic non-stick surface, alumina based, no Teflon or fluorocarbon compounds.

Great thing you are doing, and I absolutely applaud you for being willing to take in a 40 year old bird with some baggage, speaks volumes for your character. And kudo's on all the changes you are making so far, and for asking questions!

Unfortunately, I have to admit I don't have the slightest clue as for the griddle recommendation. I use a sauce pan for just about everything heh.

Good Morning everyone! :) Thanks for the welcome. This is definitely a learning experience. I went from no child to a permanent 3 year old. :D

Sorry, I should have posted an example of what I was looking for. I found this one last night while browsing: Target : Expect More. Pay Less.

It just says it is ceramic and stainless steel. No mention of non-stick.

Ceramic coated stainless steel should be A-OK. Though you may want to contact the manufacturer just to be 100% safe there isn't any non-stick stuff on it.

Amazon is a good place to read reviews. I noticed many people complained about the Oster heating unevenly, and that the plastic parts got very hot. The Hamilton beach 38518 with Durathon ceramic coating got high marks for even heat and nonstckiness. I think Target may carry it. I notice that all these grills are only Teflon free on the cooking surface, but since there are other plastic parts there is always a risk. My sister out-law and I loaded up an older crock-pot, went for a walk, and came home to find the heating element had gone crazy and had nearly melted through the bottom of the pot. She had stone counters, so maybe it wouldn't have started a fire... So I never leave any kitchen appliance running unattended now. I'd rather use the pressure cooker for a short time than the slow cooker while I'm away.

When these coatings first came out, I called the toll free number to confirm there was no Teflon or the like. The rep answered me very quickly, but when I explained that I had a pet bird and that overheated ptfe type compounds would kill him, she put me on hold and contacted an engineer in the company to confirm. She was very concerned and kept asking until she felt confident enough to reassure me. Even so, I take care not to leave the pan on the heat if it's empty - no preheating. One of the major cooking magazines tested Teflon pans, and found that with food in them they never got hot enough to cause any degradation of the coating, but an empty pan quickly reached 600 degrees which was hot enough to cause the coating to break down and release harmful chemicals. Sorry for the nerd blast, but maybe this will be a good reference for future searchers.

Welcome, and thanks so much for rescuing Sunny from a drab existence. You have certainly put sunshine in Sunny's life!! Giving her a new lease in life is a most noble gesture of love.

Sunny sounds like an extraordinarily sweet BFA; five months of ownership and her dominant behavior is friendliness!! She probably knows her new forever home is the best!

Yes! Thank you Kentuckienne. That Hamilton Beach griddle looks perfect.

Where generally in NC are you I'm right near Durham. I'm sure there are other people in nc with amazons but I only know 2 you and a buddy of mine from school.

Thanks Scott. Yes, she is a very sweet bird and hilarious with a lot of personality. The woman I got her from taught her to say "oh God" so any time something happens Sunny will shriek OH GOD. it makes me laugh which makes her laugh. I love it.

CDavis, I'm about 2 hours east of you; near the coast.
