Harley-Blue and Gold macaw
Hi everyone
I just got my first blue and gold macaw recently and decided to join this forum to talk to and learn from others. He's my first pet bird but I have handled and cared for a wide range of species in a medical, rehabilitation, and education setting.
The family I got my macaw from had a serious illness in the family and he had not been handled for quite some time (3 years) prior to me giving him a home. We are getting used to one another and I am able to hold him and he just started to allow me rub his head. We are taking it one day at a time but I am very pleased with how our relationship is progressing. I guess that's it for now I look forward to being a part if this community.

Hello and welcome!! Glad you joined, there's so much great information here and lots of members here own macaws!

Welcome! Go read all of Birdman666's posts right now! When we first got Gus, a rescue blue and gold, he was all sweetie. Let both of us pick him up, scratch him all over, just a big darling. But there is really such a thing as parrot honeymoon, where they are on their best behavior in new situations, and we didn't do enough to take advantage of that period. Now he's already picked up some bad habits that need correcting - lunging and biting me, guarding the top of his cage, throwing up constantly for his beloved (not me). I would have worked more to reinforce stepping up, especially. Good luck with the new baby and keep us posted on your progress, please!
