I've been out of the bird keeping endeavor for a while but am looking to adopt a parrot soon. I've had Cockatiels and Lovebirds many years ago and would like to introduce a larger parrot to our family.

I welcome any advice from those who have more experience than me. I've been perusing this forum for the past week and have learned a lot already!

I live in Maine with my wife, two kids of 9 and 11, 2 dogs and a shy cat.

The size and temperament of a bird will be influenced by your kids and other pets. At one extreme would be a macaw; possibly very intimidating to your kids, and less likely to be bothered by your dogs and cat. (but not impossible!) On the other hand, you've had smaller birds and wish for something larger. A conure may be ideal from the size POV, yet more vulnerable to your 4-legged companions. You'll need to judge how much "bird" is satisfactory with your pre-teens and how to best safeguard from your other pets.

Hello and a warm welcome to the forums! Enjoy your new adventure. Glad to see you doing your research first, you'll be glad you did.
