I've been a lurker for a while and unfortunately I'm finally introducing myself under not so happy circumstances. I was the mommy to a rescued Senegal named Joey. Sadly, my feathered baby is now gone. He flew out the door. I have been completed devestated.
He came to me as a fairly good bird, however, he did not like men, and was like most senegals, a one person bird...He had a few other issues but I'm the type of person who loves the challenge of rehabilitating/resocializing animals who may not have had a great past. After only a couple of months, he would step up and demand attention from not only me, but both of my sons as well. My 18 yo is the one that took some time and we were very gradual knowing his non-favoritism of men...I guess it was the deep voice?
I loved him imensely. He would be out with me or on his play yard for a couple of hours while I got ready for work, and out with the family as long as I was home... He even loved my dogs(I have yorkies) and would soon climb down on the couch and walk to them, playing in their hair. If the dogs heard him fussing(either at me or whatever), they'd rush to check on him...and he loved it.
I was just about to look into another rescue. I love the thought of showing an animal that has been mistreated, although I know that's not the case with all of the rehomes, or have been just turned in for whatever circumstance and being able to give the unconditional love right back to them. I have a couple of friends who have parrots (amazon, cockatiel) and we would get them together (for socialization efforts) and they had become good friends....
I have done everything I could. I posted on 911parrotalert, craigslist, gone to local places, put fliers up at petsmart & petco and now all I can do is check every day and wait. His cage is out front as well as his play yard since it is colorful, I'm hoping that will help.
I did catch sight of him when he flew out..unfortunately, he didn't just fly within my street or neighboring streets or into a neighbors tree as I read most will. I live in a fairly new community and well, you know how they feel about trees...cut everyone of them down so a house can be built(gosh I hate that). There is some dense woods behind the row of houses across from me and that's where I lost sight of him so I'm thinking if he landed, it was probably within the tall trees in the woods.
I've gone out day and night, binoculars, calling, flashlight, anything I could think of... Now I'm just trying to keep hope in that one day, maybe he will still return.
If anyone knows of any rescuse in maryland or surrounding, I'd love to know about them to keep them in mind. I've had birds in the past and just love these little creatures. I've read Parrots for Dummies and have learned even more than I ever had int he past.
Sorry for the long intro. I certainly did not expect it to be on a sad note. I enjoy reading all of your wonderful and informative posts & stories...
